and of course Staff can't do anything about it.
Washingtonc never specified that he was selling you a horse egg, he went through with the deal that he offered you. Just because you were trying to buy a horse egg does not mean that he was trying to sell you one in in these private messages. This is not illegal and no action will be taken.
Intentionally deceiving people should be considered trolling and fall under the following category
Section III: Trolling
Clause I: General Trolling, Harassment and Common Sense
This rule is simple. Don't troll (look up "Troll (Internet)") users away from the server.
Harassment (gameplay and chat) is also very unwelcome and can get you punishment depending on the severity. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, bullying, any form of blackmail, and anything that falls under the rules for chat channels.
What I really think needs to be enforced is this clause
Don't bend the rules in any smart / troll-y way thinking you will get away with it and look like a genius. You won't. We do not appreciate users bending our rules in anyway to troll our community. If you see a rule that has a few loopholes, or can be bent in any way, report it to us and post it in our suggestion forum. We will gladly take a look at it and change it if need be. Finding ways around the rules will be treated under staff discretion and will result in warnings / kicks or worse. Use common sense, and don't troll the community.
I don't understand why the linked thread isn't a precise example of "bending the rules" That is EXACTLY what the accused felon (and others like him or her) is guilty of.
The fact that they flaunt this discrepancy between nomenclature is egregious and unacceptable in my opinion and I would really apprecaite it if Staff could reexamine how they are handling this kind of scam-that-is-not-a-scam.
Anything? Any staff have a response? Is anything being done fix this situation or is the standard response of "its not illegal, its unfortunate but not illegal" still the company line? We are supposed to learn to live with the pseudo-legality of this kind of transaction.

People like this, when complaints are made against them, have their reputation stained forever, personally I tend to read the ban appeals/complaints forum, and so do many 0thers. These people will suffer because no one will help them, trade with them or talk to them. These people always stay in the "grey" area of the rules but they will be caught one day, they will have a solid case put against them, and they will fall.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to alert others to the scams that people carry out and explain to them how to take appropriate action to ensure they don't fall for the traps.-

I agree that blacklisting these types of individuals is a good course of action for standard users, practicing proactive approaches by asking "What kind of egg are you sell" when you see someone start an ambiguous auction etc. But unfortunately that can only go so far. Until there is a punishment there will be more people who try to take advantage of others in (what I consider to be) an illegal way.

i wholeheartedly disagree
More people should be talking about it and him specifically so more people know not to have any kind of dealings with him. He should publicly blacklisted and no one should trade with him or anyone else.-

I thought this thread would die out in a week or two. Eventually I HAD to see why it was still active.
Really, Staff, why is this still here? If I went in-game and said "Abc123 is a scammer! He scammed me!" Staff would tell me to be quiet.
You sit here and let people post this?
Anyway, as to my opinion, this seems like a very, very, very sticky situation. Besides having staff ban people who try and do this, because it's within rules, I think Andrew should simply make a minor change to the rules. This is very simple, and would solve it all.
Clause II.i: Renaming Items
Users shall not rename items for the sole purpose of increasing its value in an auction or trade. You cannot give an item a name of an item that already exists. If a renamed item is to be sold in auction or trade, you must specify that it is a renamed item and say what the original item was. If a user is caught renaming items to take advantage of other users, their punishment will fall under scamming. When selling an item you must describe it 100%. If you say, "egg" you must describe if it is chicken, villager, or horse. When selling a "named" item, such as "melon sword" or "pumpkin axe", you must describe enchants, if any, and type of tool (sword, pick ,ect), and what material it is made out of (wood, iron, ect). If you are selling two or more items in one auction, you must define each and every one individually, and must show that the items are two different items, not just one (example: selling melon sword, must say if selling a melon and selling a sword).
Something like this would solve the whole issue. -
Although it is unfortunate that these individuals continue to take advantage of others, the staff team must follow procedures when dealing with rules. The fact is these users did not break any specific rules and/or proper evidence was not provided allowing action to be taken. It is sad to see this, but the buyers have a responsabilty to the following:
You trade at your own risk. If you do not know or 100% trust the person stay away.
Pay close attention to what the description is and make them repeat it.
Confirm the item and take a screen shot for evidence.
The truth is that most of these complaints/issues could simply be avoided if buyers were more careful. -

I'm not sure if this has been announced yet, but there have also been cases where users state this in auction: "Auctioning a melon and sword starting at (high-price here)" People see it and think that they are selling a melon sword when in reality they are selling a diamond sword and a melon. I just thought you could add this if possible.
