However, what i am looking into is modern texture packs that perhaps don't look drasticaly uglier in default. Flows HD was on my list, but it ruins clay, and beautifies wool. Should i try Moartex?

Well, i tried Moartex. My only complaint is that it requires MCPatcher. When i ran it, it screwed up the whole chat font and macro label sizes. In general, it looks good.

I have a question for @BackToThePast, how did you edit particle textures for a custom resource pack? Did you use an image editing program, or simply changed all of them to a different pack? -

I edit it using special editing programs and getting them from other resource packs, then replace the file. The file can be located by, clicking the texture pack/resource pack -> assets -> minecraft -> textures -> particle.-

I haven't had time to make my own resource pack, but I think that's what I'll be doing henceforth. Perhaps working off of Faithful 32x32 and replacing GUIs and such.
