To me, it seems like a clear example of http://lesswrong.com/lw/j7/anchoring_and_adjustment/
I say "1 or 2 days", you think "that's not enough, let's make it 3". While, had I said nothing, you would maybe have starter from 6 days, and then adjusted up or down.

Yes, exploiting this bug of the human mind might be acceptable in trade (let's be honest: every successful merchant makes use of this), but it cannot be tolerated in law.
That's why banned users who give an estimate of a "fair" tempban for themselves should be issued a 10 days longer tempban, just because they tried.
And, most important, that's also why punishments shouldn't be at staff discretion, but there should be a public punishment table[see note], showing whether offenders will have their balance reset or not, how long a tempban they will be issued, etc: every detail of the prescribed punishments for any offense. Punishment should be predictable: because if it isn't, then people will just gamble on "who gets the least severe punishment for the most terrible offense", as it already happens right now.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_certainty

[note]: I'm not talking of a public ban history, that has been denied. I'm not referring to a list of "who was banned and for what": I'm referring to a public list like "x-ray is punished with a 2 week tempban + bal wipe, 2nd offence is punished with 1 month tempban... etc"

Amen. People know they can get away with shit, so they'll continue doing it. The punishment system should be ordered, consistent, and predictable. People should should never be able to get more than 3 bans in a reasonable time period(say one or two years). If they get that many then they should simply be banned for a year. (Or more, or less. Depends on the severity of the bans)

I thought this already was in effect.

I was quite shocked that I got a 3 day tempban and balance wipe for when I recently was PvP hacking as I thought the punishment would be more severe. I don't feel that that type of punishment works. How I would do it would be:

1st time using hacks - 14-20 day tempban, balance wipe, banned from sg for 3 days.

2nd time using hacks - Soft permaban, if user successfully appeals then they are restarting as builders (or tycoon+ restarts as a mayor or president)

3rd time using hacks - Full on permaban, towns available for claim (you know the drill)

    I feel this is fair.

1st time is a bit harsh IMO, the problem is repeat offenders.
Demoting below president can cause issues with towns.

Marking this under review (from in progress) - we need to discuss what exactly we will be doing with those who hack in SG and the points they accumulate. We want to focus on something harsh, but need to ensure it can easily be done in a clean way with our database. @JamieSinn

Ok here’s my opinion on the matter:
(I apologize if someone said this already)
Using a very popular SG player, @purplelegoender , in a hacking case in the past for an example of my opinion. Purple was accused of SG hacking back in 2016 and was found guilty by the GA’s at the time. In his appeal, he still denied using hacked clients and good ol’ JamieSinn personally viewed the evidence. He said that it didn’t show hacking and he was unbanned.

Long story short, Purple was innocent, yet banned for hacking. If we implement this, there may be innocent players who would be badly hurt by this rule.

Wiping SG/McMMo stats, if implemented, would be done on the appeal upon getting unbanned. Or in other words, if a user appeals and it's determined their ban is wrongful, then their stats wouldn't be wiped - You avoid the problem of punishing innocents with that.

iirc jamie said that you can’t wipe sg stats bc if you wipe someone’s stats then if someone killed them or got points from them those points are removed too

I was replying to Jdawger's objections regarding hurting innocents, not feasibility, though.

But yes, wiping SG stats shouldn't be feasible, at least under the current system. Wiping McMMo gains should be looked into, however, if not done already.

They're talking about SG stats, not ECD balance. Resetting ECD balance, unlike SG stats, is extremely straightforward; however I'm not sure it would be conclusive: what about hackers who laundry all their dirty money into diamond blocks and shit? They would barely lose anything with a balance reset. I kinda recall Jamie or someone saying that they would do something more refined than just a plain balance wipe, however I can't find the message and I'm old enough that I might just recall wrongly.
