Remap the drop key to something farther away. I used backspace. I also lost two picks to this silliness.
Great thread! Lots of awesome advice. Thank you for posting.

BTW, great information you are sharing here. Not sure if you have covered it, but I tend to either build a fishing table or "hole" close to a mob grinder or a small box to fortune ores while I wait for mobs to gather. Great use of time imho.-

Nicely said @AdmiralD This is my work area in mining world for the time being.
That is the output of my skeleton spawner in mining world. I set up jungle logs around it to grow cocoa beans. I harvest the beans between passes on the skeletons. When fully matured, it yields $250 in cocoa beans, no fancy climbing, just what is nearby. To the new players, since cocoa beans always yield 3 beans, you replant, and every harvest will give you $1.20. They grow fast, so to have them next to soemthing you are killing time at is cool. A similar trick could be used if you fish. Between fishing runs, when you change your pole, you could hop around and grab some extra cash from the cocoa beans.
As AdmiralD suggested. Having an area for fortuning is a great idea. I buy ores cheap, or collect silk touched ores from the overworld to process in mining world. If you are in Rising or Legacy, and use fortune 3 on ore, you will get the ore, but not the experience. So you have to bring your ore to the Mining World, similar gag for silk touching Quartz Ore from the Nether if you are willing to brave the pvp there to find it.
In the corner, up the stairs from my spawner output, I have made room to place 64 ore at a time, and I can harvest it. I don't like to use Super Breaker to bust up ores, because the randomizer is ... unfriendly to the drop rate when I do it that way. So I fortune them block at a time, collecting the value of the harvested ore, and the value of the experience that I can sell later.
I set up watermelons to grow on the side. I can use them as food, or I can harvest them for slices to convert to seeds. I have been stockpiling the seeds. When other players decide to make a melon farm, if they are in a rush, will pay a premium rate for quick seeds. I watch the market :) Some Spawn shops will place buy signs for a reasonable return on my investment from time to time.
If I plan on running a cycle to just sell, I use my silk touch pick axe. It is not super fast, but here is the math if I cut it with sword, it is faster than with a pick, even an eff 5 pick, but I get a melon block. I get 3-6 slices with the sword per melon. Each slice sells for .10 to the server. if I put 9 slices together in the crafting grid($.90 value on their own, never hand sell melonslices unless you are in a hurry, you are throwing away .75 for every 9 slices you hand sell), it makes a melon block that sells for $1.65 if you silk touch it, for every melon (you don't have to be a mathematician to see that it is statistically better to get/sell melon blocks.
I plant these 4 mushrooms in the middle of a high roofed area. About 8 blocks will do fine from mushroom to ceiling. 4 blocks out on each side of the planted center. Bonemeal as I described earlier will make these sprout up and into the rafters of your chamber. Harvest with silk touch axe for awesome profits. I am running a great deal in one room. Someday a person will come across this room, and use it or destroy it. Or the world will be reset. If I have a heads up, I'll clear out my resources, but they don't usually warn for when they are clearing things out.
When I am not mining, or farming, I am grinding mobs for experience while doing small time profits that regrow all around. Consistant forward momentum. I have been asked, again and again online, how I can make 5K per hour steadily without star tools? With max tools, its not hard, I could be doing better if I focused more on one task and just slammed it out. I diversify, shop, invest, buy, sell, auction, search, explore, and wander between tasks. The trick to making your money?
Find something you like doing, find something that will keep you excited to play, and not get boring for you. One persons system might not work perfectly for the next persons system.
I own a town with a pumpkin farm that I let my reisdents use for free. It is 51 floors of pumpkins, built for me on commission by @romper83273 a few years back. If I just work the pumpkins in that tower, I can hand sell $54 per floor. That is $2754 every time I cycle that building, and with a max pumpkin axe? Thats not terribly long. There are people around that are willing to buy pumpkins above server sell price. Combine that bit of knowledge, with the time to harvest the pumpkins, and you can profit from your efforts even better.
If you are going to buy perms to a farm, make sure that they are perms in perpetuity. That is, a once and done investment, so that you can potentially return to farm when you want to. This removes the need for you to invest in a farm, as one is maintained for you by the salesperson. Try to make sure you have an easy access to the farm, either through a portal or a person with TPA working with the person running the farm. That way, you can be certain to at least break even on your investment. If you spend 5K on a farm perms deal. Don't stop farming until you at least make back your 5K on farming there. Ideally, you should make sure to clear a profit, but I know that sometimes that is just not to be.
Try to make investments with your money, think ahead to your returns. Set realistic, achievable goals for yourself. Above all? Have fun with it :) Always a good idea to read the server rules, I know there are a lot of them, but they are spelling out everything that can get you in trouble on the server.

@milesdarkedge - it is awesome to see you come back and then to share your knowledge with others. You have quite the setup for your mob spawn. I missed the coords though, your screenshot must have failed :p
The only thing missing is the kitchen sink ;)-

Disaster has struck. During the server down issue, I was offline, figured no problem, I will get back into the swing of it today, and for this session just either work for twice as long, or just coast on the forward momentum that lottery win gave me. I logged in, opened the chest I log off in front of, and all of my primary tools are gone. My armor is gone. Pretty much everything I put into the chest yesterday just aren't there. I searched the house, in case I had put it in the wrong chest, I did /back to check the last place I was, nope....
I lost my diamond armor, all Protectioned up, Aquaaffinitied helmet, depthstrider 3 feather fall 4 boots. Everything Unbreakable 3 except the chest plate, blast protection3 on pants, and Projectile protection 4 on one of the pieces.
I lost my Eff 5, unbreakable3, silktouch shears
Lost Sharp5,unbreakable3,loot3 sword
Lost my Max Fortune and Silk picks
Lost my Max Fortune 3 axe
Lost my Max silk shovel
Disaster.... I have spoken with mod, but pretty sure there is nothing that they can do for me. This is a kick in the pants, even with backup tools, that is a serious loss. -

Imagine my surprise when my son and I were on a mine run and ran into this photograph :p
I did enjoy collecting a few bones since I have not seen a skele spawner in several resets - left you a grown mushroom tree and a few "treats" in the chest.
So I am one of those that came by for a visit, to use, to give back a little, and hopefully enjoy again someday!
Thanks for building some nice money makers while waiting but of course I spent time with my fortune pick and some ores ;)-

@milesdarkedge I've recently come in to some spare tools I won't be using by way of an inactive player removal. I would like to offer these, plus my e-rep services, at no cost to you as a way of furthering you towards your goal. I know it can't be easy to lose tools, lose progress, and have to start over.

This is an awesome thread. Thanks so much for sharing your insights! I too am saving for an eff7 and almost have the money/star combo to do it but am now calculating what will be the time it will take to payback the investment. Now that I have found ways to be enterprising in making money to save up for the eff7 .. i keep wondering if the startool is the right way to go.
Also, i can do ereps .. so feel free to pm me if i am online and i will do them for you for free for sharing such great info!
Best of luck,
~alpaca-

So, as of 8/10/15 I have purchased the Eff VII star tool for all of my efforts. This was well under my established baseline of 500 days, even with the distractions of Real Life :) My time on is still sporadic, but with the Eff VII I can hit upwards of 10K in an hour of solid efforts. Awesome times, I hope that this is helpful to new players :)
