I just realized how unstable our economy would be if it existed in a nation in modern times.
Let's say our nation's name is Ecocitycraftia (original, I know) and everybody got money the same way they do on the server. There would be 3 main ways that people gain money which all seem weird in a real-life situation.
First, lottery. So many of the people who have a higher rank of the server use the lottery as a way to get money. In Eocitycraftia people would be losing money left and right and the economy would crumble because some of the money is coming out of thin air. Plus, taxes on the tickets that are given to our ruler/president/dictator/government-person/big scary voice andrewkm are used in a BIGGER lottery. All fun in game, weird out of it.
Second, agriculture. We have so many giant farms of entirely melons or pumpkins that someone is buying for some odd reason. No industrial nation can thrive when agriculture is the main export. But I don't know, maybe the penguins in Antarctica like melons and/or pumpkins.
Lastly, survival games. We can gain thousands of dollars... In about 20 minutes... By brutally murdering ~7 people with a blunt and blocky sword which occasionally is glowing with sharpness. And the people who died just re-appear in our capital unharmed, maybe without any items. Maybe andrewkm is a sorcerer.
This is all in a comedic manner, I love ECC but I was just thinking while doing my history homework. Love you guys, bye!

I make my money from graphic design and event planning services. I'm starting up new businesses soon too. I don't farm or mine and Although I do own a station in the market it's just for an excuse to build a pretty cafe-bistro shop. Most if not all my money come from my graphic service and entrepreneur related businesses.

Discussion of merits can only be within the bounds of a reality. This reality is ECC. We try to put ideas into other frames to see if the image is reasonable or not. The question is: does the economy make sense with lotto, large farms, and sg games as means to make money - and how does the contrast to the real world.
Lotto - At least in the United States, the lotto is a system that most people have taken part in at one time or another. I think you're right that there is a discrepancy with the lotto, because in a real lottery the chance to win the entire lotto is proportionate to how many possible combinations there are - and there are smaller rewards as well. On ECC when we have tax back lotto, in a way it is sort of like a more real lottery, and all the other lottos are like the smaller reward lotto wins.
Farming - In the real world, farms are the basis of any advanced economy. The first amenity every civilization strives for is an abundance of food. While we don't eat a enormous amount of food, allowing us to sell it makes up for the stock piles.
Survival Games - In the real world, people spend immense amounts of money on sporting events and competitions. Massive industries surround this. So competing and winning money is not entirely too crazy.-
