I fully support the removal of this except for hard to obtain blocks like glowstone mossycobble circle stone blocks etc. Another thing to consider is that now, if someone creates something huge and they have a lot of people working on it, they can confidently say every material in the structure was obtained legitimately. This is a small point but it matters to me as I am going to be starting a huge project soon that will hopefully be done completely legitimately where every material in the project was gathered by someone.
This will also open up other options beside farming. You could get contracted by someone to mine a ton of cobble and then turn it into stone. There could be whole groups of players not farming, but chopping trees.

Ugh, Andrew please don't consider this.
The people suggesting this are those that play this game like they live here. There aren't enough consistant players in this server to replace what the server store provides. The wild would be even more of a mess as the whole place would be farmed out for stock.
I hate the idea of killing the server store, absolutely hate it.
I can only get on this game at the end of the day when my wife has gone to bed or otherwise busy and I am home from work.
I already have plenty to do to not have to go and mine out all my materials as well. I didn't donate over hundreds of dollars to this server because I can't play Minecraft anywhere else. I did it because this server met all my needs as a player with little time to commit to a game they love.
Remove the store and force everything to potentially be out of stock, too expensive, too much work to get...and dang I will be considering leaving the server because I can't play this server anymore hardcore than I already am. -
I think we would need temp mining map(s) if it did happen because there really would be some mass strip mining by everyone to see materials. Keep the rare blocks in the store and uncreatable, creative mode only. Ditch the replenishable and easy to obtain (woods, dirt, cobble, smoothstone etc.)

I'd like to make an argument from my point of view, but I don't have time to go through this whole thread and go against everyones arguments just to prove my point on saying I agree/support this suggestion...
I'll be back later. :p -
HOW TO SOLVE THE /SETHOME IN STORE PROBLEM: build store out of stone. place lava in cieling, controlled by pistons. close store? BAM. lava on. you tp in? BAM. your dead.
-
looking at some of the responses, this is my idea: If the server store gets removed, we might eventually need to add a temp mining map that gets reset every so often, depending on how big it was.

This is a bad idea for many reasons. (those are already stated in this thread.)
1,some people can't be bothered to mine/gather the materials they need because they don't have the time or just need mass
amounts of money.
2,some people can't stand gathering materials.
There are more but I cbf looking through the thread to find them all :p
A good idea to make both sides happy is to make the server store for Bulk only(not the unobtainable blocks), this means that people will go to the playerstores for smaller amounts.
so make 3 buysigns with 1000blocks, 2000blocks and 5000 blocks per click with a slight bulk discount like 2x serverprice for 1000X, 1.9x serverprice for 2000x and 1.8x serverprice for 5000x -
Suppose I should chime in too.
The removal of the server store would be bad for the server for lots of reasons:
- The server store drains money out of the economy
The server store must be one of the biggest drains on user money in ECC, there isn't a single feature that deletes money faster, and since the resources in the server store are above average price, it really is deleting money. - The server store prices are above average price
This means that people are loosing out any time they buy from server store, rather than from players or doing it themselves.
This means for most smaller places, buying bulk materials this way is simply just not feasible. If this becomes untrue, that means we need to adjust the server store prices for inflation, and this is how we solve that problem. - If we remove the server store, we would also need to remove /sell, otherwise money is being created and not destroyed.
- During times when the server is lite on players, the problem will be actually finding someone willing to sell what you want.
Most stores don't go to the effort of selling every block in the game. Even when trying to track down items like diamonds, I find myself searching every single shop at spawn, and every build gate, and only find 2 or 3 signs that actually have any stock, 2 of which i'm sure are priced just to troll people. - Removing the stores will reduce how attractive this server is to new players.
You have to consider that the idea of a server store, even when priced a little high, is still a good attraction to new players. It is a staple of lots of servers, and means that you can obtain the blocks you want, if your willing to pay for it. - Playing styles differ, the store helps to solve this.
People like to play minecraft differently, some people like to mine, some people like to explore, some people like to farm. The server store allows people to play the game as they want, and know they can still get what they need to build their perfect house. - Removing the server store only benefits old players.
Removing the store would mostly make it difficult for new players who are new the community. As it stands mayors and presidents generally have a large group they work with, trade with and trust. This means they have a circle to trade with, and can get fair prices. This isn't true for new players, who are just building their first house.

I am going to make a town that is completely custom terraformed. I want my town to be built block by block with every block being gathered then smelted. If the server store is still open I won't know who I can trust to have mined the block by hand. This may seem like a dumb and insignificant argument but it matters to me. Honestly there are tons of builders looking for "jobs" and I tell them to go mine and to not find a job because most jobs don't pay you very much. If builders could actually make money be growing trees mining then cutting down the trees there would be less builders complaining about resident being too hard to get. Also, this isn't a very hardcore economy if we can just buy whenever we want, whatever we want. People may say that there will be inflation but this can be countered by making ranks, towns, world edits, and flag changes more expensive. Also I heard it would hurt new players more than old players. I completely disagree with this. I a future mayor (hopefully) will have to go and find the materials I need. I am not going to be able to just go to the server store. New players will be who I will contract to get me the materials I need.

This is completely true. However, with the recent addition of lottery tax, I'm thinking that we have a new dump to take it's place. Not nearly as great of a dump, but still better than just taking it out completely without it. Still, if another money dump has been made, or will be made, I think we can balance it out.

I can, however, say that one thing we are going for is the status of "Hardcore" economy. It's easier to be one when it's more player based. It also is a a staple of lots of servers, yes, but why make lots of things, especially those based around an economy when we are a server that focuses on making it even more 'hardcore' than other servers, like other servers? In other words, if we make our economy have the same things, like server stores being a big part of it, what separates our economy from theirs? What makes ours have that 'hardcore' status I remember being put in the Minecraft Forum thread for bonuses? I don't have a problem with keeping/doing things to be a little bit more like other servers to attract users, I'm just saying. :p When we say we are a hardcore economy, some people that join the server are expecting and wanting it as hardcore as it gets. The more hardcore it gets, the more attractive it is to these users. The server will still be "attractive", just to a different group of users. I'm not sure this is a problem unless that group is significantly smaller.
