It is awesome when someone like Shane does a simple search to find answers already dealt with, If it is still true regarding lag, I disagree with this suggestion. If that has been addressed then I would support it. Also, please remember there are 4 tunnels at y:11 and either x:0 or z:0 that run completely to the edge of the mining world normally provided after each reset. You could easily run one of these tunnels in the time it takes for you to do /wild and wait for cool down a few times.
That's the bookmark I wanted to post here. /wild has to load a chunk to determine whether the landing spot is safe and not within a town. I guess it would be possible to define X locations in each world and /wild randomly chooses one of them - however, they would need to be moved whenever someone creates a town in that area or if the block is flooded with water/lava. TL;DR: From my point of view this problem simply cannot be addressed (properly).
