Mellons, they grow really quick and they sell for $2 each if harvesting with silk touch, without the silk touch you stil get about $1 each on average so still better then pumpkin

After today's wheat nerf, all crops achieve approximately the same maximum income. However, pumpkins require an Eff V axe which is no small investment. Melons require Eff IV Silk minimum, which is also a little pricey. If you can get ahold of one of the server's few Eff V Silk axes, melons are the best performing crop. At Eff IV they are par with the rest. Melon and Pumpkin also require large farms to be effective, while one can approach maximum income on a one chunk wheat farm. With no tool use, minimum investment, and small farms, wheat is undoubtedly the best of the three.
Personally, I farm reed -- which, coincidentally, is also par with the other crops. With all the recent balancing, no one crop stands out as a clear winner in maximum efficiency scenarios. Farm what you like. For new players, wheat is the obvious choice. -

big semi auto wheat farms are the best but they can be hard to build and require a hole town to build in
my choices for you would be
wheat:if you have acsess to a 200x200 town all to your self (semi auto)
melons;perferably my choice untill my 150x100 semi auto wheat farm is dont
you can make huge amounts with little work if you have semi auto wheat farms
but unitill you have a BIG semi auto wheat farm you should stick to melons witha silk eff 4 pick or axe to make the most untill you have that farm -

Why the hell would you build a 200x200 wheat farm when a 32x32x15 or even a 16x16x15 farm is just as profitable, and far more efficient in terms of crop growth? Not to mention the space! My wheat farm's footprint is 40x smaller than yours will be and earns just as much!
