The Zodiac Archives – ‘The Great Flood’

The following story is extract from a book found in The Great Library in Caprica. It reads as followed...

300 years before the signing of The Treaty of the Zodiac, Aerilion was the most prosperous nation in the world. It is written in ancient scrolls that her streets were paved with diamond, and her buildings covered with gold. But like Icarus, who soared too high, her towers too would one day fall.

To the south of her gates, living in the shadow of their oppressive masters, laid a small fishing village. Established around the same time as Aerilion, Picon had not been as fortunate as their neighbours, and this sign of weakness quickly led to centuries of exploitation on behalf of the Aerilionians. But on this day, the last day of Aerilion, their luck would change.

The great flood hit with no warning. It consumed the city within seconds, drowning thousands, and forever sinking Aerilion to the bottom of the unending ocean. Though the destruction was quick, it is said the the screams of the dying could be heard for days. Even today, few sail those cursed waters, for fear that the ghosts of those who lost their lives will return, and seek vengeance on the living.

Though, like their neighbours, much of their village was destroyed by the flood, Picon lost very few lives. Their knowledge of the seas gave them an advantage that Aerilion did not have, and soon, they adapted to their new environment, using the waters that had swallowed the land to prosper in their new found freedom. ‘The free city of Picon’ was soon established, quickly emerging as a leading port, and today one of the most powerful trader of goods in the world.

Though many will dispute claims that Picon’s sudden wealth, which soared exponentially in the years following the flood, was largely depended on looting the ruins of their sister nation, it is indisputable that they benefited from Aerilions demise, a fact that has left relations between the two, even today, icy at best...
