I'm guessing this is in the main world, right?

Hmm, I'll give that a shot Logik, and I'll make it a much bigger test area this time, that is if I can get world edit working :D. I'll get on that tomorrow, and I'll take a look at minecraft averages, and calculate that as well.

tl;dr lol mine @ 11 guise
Alright guys, sorry for the double post, but this is important information.
Some quick guidelines/raw data from my research,
Had to resort to mediafire, Google Docs hates me :/
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?lwrc324nxfq458r
^ a link to all the data I collected, rows B-H are % of blocks, rows J-P are actual amount of ores, and rows R-X are the selling prices. Row Z is the total per layer.
These are two images of ALL of the layers, from 6-20, compiled and analyzed.
This data was collected from a region of 501x501, from [X=0][Z=0] to [X=500][Z=500], for a total of over 3.7 million blocks, which makes it extremely accurate. Each individual layer was then analyzed, as one can see in the link provided above.
Now, here's my conclusion. Although, as seen in the chart, the most amount of money can be made from layers 9,10,11, and 12, due to the amount of lava @ layer 9 and 10, it's best to mine when your feet level is at 11, i.e. eye level is at 12.620. Therefore, Zardgyer's calculations are pretty accurate.
Thanks for reading, guys. -
I just wanted to say that you did a great job. :) Even though some say that this was a waste of time because of the wiki statistics, going out and testing them yourself is a great way to prove the statistics are correct and consistant. Facts don't become facts just because one person says its true. Many people need to test the theories first. So, you have contributed to these stats which it really cool. :)

I adjusted your formula for $$ value, Logikable, to account for experience from mining/smelting and to account for a fortune 3 pick. Here are the values I used:
Coal ore = 2.2 coal and 1 exp
Iron ore = 1 iron and .7 exp (cost .125 to smelt)
Gold ore = 1 gold and 1 exp (cost .125 to smelt)
Lapis ore = 14 lapis and 3.5 exp
Redstone ore = 6 dust and 3 exp
Diamond ore = 2.2 diamonds and 5 exp
Emerald ore = 2.2 emeralds and 5 exp
Exp was priced at $1.82 ($1500 a set, pretty easy to sell at this price). I used diamonds at $25 (could be $30) and emeralds at $40. Also, gold was $10, but could be set at $12, at least.
In order of most valuable levels, I have:
10 - 100,255
11 - 99,825
12 - 97,949
9 - 97,625
13 - 93,662
6 - 93,068
7 - 89,637
8 - 89,227 -
10 was the best, but due to lava, 11 became the best, because, remember, it means you have access to mining layer 10, 11, 12 and 13, which are all in the TOP 5 of your (and my) list.
Man, that was a lot of commas... -

Yeah, i'm sure its nearly the same, but just in case I did it. maybe the distribution is spread a little differently, idk.

i dont think anyone else here took the time to do thier own personal research on real chunks and spending 20 hours on it so we should just give zard an appluase and mine on our own levels and mind our own business
the issue on lava is interesting though and i think ill shift my level to 11
