Homeschooling is no excuse. My three siblings and I have - and were - been homeschooling since we were old enough to learn. I am now 19; I was homeschooled/virtually schooled until I was 18, two of my siblings are still at home, and my older bro is also no longer at home for school. My older brother and I started "slipping" swears by the age of 15. My parents don't swear much (one doesn't actually swear at all, ever).

At the OP: I definitely understand wanting less swearing, as you have your little sibling on the server. I always kept myself censored around my little siblings until they hit the age that the majority of kids and teens swear nowadays (~13). And to be honest, I was actually worried about telling my little brother join ECC back in the days of less (situational, though) vulgar language; I was even more worried when it came to my little sister joining.

Over ECC's time, language has been cracked down on harder and harder, but you can only do so much. It's nearly impossible to prevent language from appearing online - even more-so in real life - and filters wouldn't do much good and just cause users to find alternatives... Or even cause an uprising.

I've been severely warned for saying "crap" or "d*nm" before, and other times I have not been warned whatsoever by slipping the F word (staff were active and chatting, too). So, I think, at least, if language should be watched more carefully in-game, ALL staff need to be informed of when and when not to warn, what is considered bad, when, where, etc. Having any filter plugin would be impossible to fill (there are hundreds of thousands of vulgar word variations, swearing in other languages, etc).

I'm not sure if your sibling chats much or needs it, but at least as a temporary/once-in-a-while thing, maybe leave as many channels as possible? I know donators can leave all channels, but I definitely understand that you shouldn't have to donate to censor every place with bad language.

Edit: There is a Tutorial Island on ECC, but I think it is back under construction...? Maybe first-time spawn could be in there (if possible) with sending messages disabled, but having a fairly easy-to-find portal to main spawn where chat would be enabled. Local Spawn tends to be the worse area of vulgarity and advertising.

That may cut down on some of the spawn vulgarity and advertising, but could be a pain to set up or confuse enough new users to make them leave. (Which would also be an issue with any disabled chat; even the simplest of servers with info right in the face are extremely confusing.)

Adding to what moofink said, it is a habit for some people but, you just can't stop it but, +1 if this is possible

Also commenting on what moofink said.

Homeschooling is not the only thing as a reason I don't swear. But ECC rules keep me from disclosing other reasons.

^ I remember when I first joined and Ike was like "Your curse like a sailor". Yeeeaaah.. I don't necessarily curse that much anymore and seeing a few slip-ups every now and then don't matter too much as long as you are careful not to repeat them. You could just tell your sibling if they see bad words to not repeat them, seeing a bit of slip-up won't kill you certainly. Or like some previous posters said, install a client-side curse filter if you're THAT worried.

But, yet every time somebody swears, the first thing I see is a complaint by you.

Sputnick I'd rather not start a flaming war in a suggestion thread.

I don't complain about cursing, My parents and grandparents use it regularly, (not my grandma :D) , my employer does, my friends do, and sadly I do (breaking the habit), but on ECC, I'm clean. Anyway, only if it gets to the point of racism and sexual nature will I complain.

Yes but I'm sure we all now how kids obey perfectly.

Either way, I'd rather not have them even exposed to in the first place. Would you take a little kid to an R rated movie with tons of fighting action and heavy language and just tell him to not say those words and forget about it ect? Probably not.

I'm not saying ECC is rated R, but there are a lot of swearwords that would have a place in a Pg-13 movie that i see on ECC. And not much is done about em, except a warning.
