After watching the activities of a number of players over the last month or so, particularly those who seem to be 'habitual' transgressors of the server rules. I have been looking at how these players could be better persuaded to adhere to the server rules.

As the minimal ban periods - which range from a few hours to possibly a few days - are ridden out and the player returns, just to continue with what got them banned in the first place, or they be creative and begin breaking other rules!

The other method to possibly address this may be with unban passes. These are unban passes that cost real money.

Now these may not be provided in unlimited quantity to a particular player who has unchecked access to a credit card, but rather limit a player to say 3 chances to purchase these. Once all 3 have been used - Well then I guess it is time for a perm ban. If the player is not willing to reform after 2 or 3 strikes, they are not going to change and can be deemed as 'unwanted' on ECC.

How could this work - First unban pass would cost like $5, second $10 and final third one $15. Each repeat offense carries an increased penalty.

Why not use ECD - I believe players will make loans from other players to 'pay' against their misconduct, resulting in further scamming and the server does not benefit from direct lost income.

Why make them pay real money - Players who break rules by hacking with modified clients, scamming other players or who are generally bad mouthing in chat are really disruptive to the community, resulting in players leaving, are responsible for newer players not remaining on the server - This all has a financial impact on the server in real money. (Read lost donations)

Why this suggestion - As a regular player on ECC, there are days when the same previously banned player keeps coming back like a bad rash, doing what they did before with no indication of changing their behaviour which has begun to raise the question to myself - Why am I putting up with this, do I need to witness this day in and day out?

I think something should be done, but I don't like this idea.

It would be simple actually, if they got actual punishments it would be more likely they would follow the rules. I hate that they aren't being punished more severely after several repeat offenses. It is annoying that these people just appeal and are back on, and even after several appeals saying they won't do it again, they still do, and still just get banned and appeal and it gets accepted.

Maybe add a ecodollars penalty as well. Or increase the ban time each time. Something needs to be done though it's ridiculous.

An Ecodollars penalty would result in more use of hacked clients to gain ECD either through more instances of x-ray use, auto fishing etc.

The suggestion of longer ban periods for repeat bans may also help.

We mostly allow (easy) unbans so we keep newer players. Say they get banned for minor grief of a farm. Are you really gonna pay money or are you going to leave? For most of builders, they chose leave. To me that seems like wasted potential. As a community we want all the players we can get. Losing many to bans is not the way to go about growing.

On the other hand, users who continually break rules only to have a longer temp ban need to be dealt with more severely. I could see justification for this case but not for most bans. Also when a player is so extremely toxic to the community, staff makes their ban only appealable to phys. That is why this has never been in place.

@oxwood2 My suggestion is for the more serious ban reasons. Not the petty offences by new comers as they explore and maybe 'test' how flexible the server rules may or may not be.

Players who historically have proved to be repeat offenders or those still at builder rank arrive on the server determined to be as disruptive and anti-establishment as possible - We can easily pinpoint such players, these are the players who after requiring to go through the escalated appeal process may be required to prove commitment and remorse, invest in a Unban Pass. The current appeal process can remain in place. Just let's have some additional steps to better manage some of the rogue elements that still exist.

Well that is where choices are made, if ECC is treated as just a random server would that player really benefit either the community or server?

I notice that you obviously don't treat it as a random server.

I think some bans should be longer. What is banning a user for 1 hour gonna do? I have 50 other games I play on so its not like I'm gonna be dying to get back on ECC.

I think it's a good idea. There's only so many times you can beat someone with a carrot. Sometimes, you actually have to use a stick. For the exceptionally slow learners, a log (unban pass) should be required.

I have seen a few VIPs, Mayors, Presidents, etc. get banned repeatedly for doing the same thing over and over. Why should the rest of us that DON'T break the rules have to put up with them merely because they have longevity or donations? The rest of us donating / upper-rankers should get SOMEthing out of it. Having the repeat offenders have to pay irl money (that goes to server upkeep) to be unbanned might make them learn to play nice, especially after they've been banned 3-4 times already.

I agree but the server has already lost a lot of hi donating players and a lot of players in general, we cant really afford to lose anymore players

Can we afford to keep the repeat offenders at the expense of the non-offenders who leave because the repeaters offenders are never stopped / removed?

If a bully continues to throw sand at the playground, eventually the other kids leave to play somewhere else.

The "Unban Pass" is not meant to replace the existing system, rather it's to add another tier.

Example (Let's use Harassment, just to use a rule)
not counting in-game or PM warnings

1st offense: temp-banned for an hour
    2nd offense: temp-banned for 3 hours
    3rd offense: temp-banned for 6 hours
4th offense: banned for 24 hours, appeal required, Moderator level ban lift
5th offense: banned for 36 hours, appeal required, Super Moderator level ban lift
6th offense: banned for 48 hours, appeal required, Game Admin+ level ban lift
7th offence: perma-banned, appeal required, Server Owner only ban lift

The above is merely an example, since I have no knowledge of "punishment" levels, increments, nor Staff duties. I would assume that the Staff HAS a written policy for such things, but it is not published. (Nor should it) However, anyone can go to the Appeal Forum and flip through the pages to see how many times some people have filled out Ban Appeals. (albeit, an extremely small fraction of the server population)

My curiosity led me to follow one person who has filled out NINE ban appeals within one year, though not all for the same offense. How many times were they warned before being banned? How many new or veteran people could this person have driven away from ECC because "they'll just be unbanned again". Should these offenders still be here?

My personal opinion would be to add the "Unban Pass" in somewhere around the 5th offense on my example list. No one is talking about adding it to 1st offense.

Only thing I agree with is that some people are given too many chances. Pretty sure I know if one person who has been banned over 30 times.

I can understand your concerns about the number of bans a player has had, however I don't think that buying your way back onto the Server is the right solution. Someone's ability to pay real money should not influence whether their appeal is successful or not.

If you have ideas/suggestions for our current system (new punishments, new way of handling appeals etc) then feel free to post a new suggestion. As for this suggestion, I'm afraid that it is something which wouldn't be added.
