Accepted [Suggestion] Server Icon

Now I'm not a professional linguist or anything, but I'm pretty sure that was one of those "joke" things you hear tell bout in other parts of the internet.

For clarity's sake I also don't literally believe a smurf made the logo in the 90's either.

Decided to make my own, it's way too terrible to be featured as our server icon but I think it's better than the current one (and it fits with our current banner):

 

Well, it is a definite improvement, although now it just looks like the smurf moved on to mspaint

When we had the banner competition for money/coupons that got tons of good subs, I know there are people on here that could churn out a solid one in a second. Maybe there needs to be a reward. I would be willing to add to the pot for a reward for a tolerable graphic icon. In ecd, anyway. Actually if someone just wants to add some dimension, shading and polish to Sub's icon I think it will do.

I like the coloring as well as the skyline, but the shading on the text is way too much imo.

I'm starting to think the best bet is to change the icon into the sad smurf painting the existing icon. At least then we will attract all the cool meta hipsters.

 

It's literally all about what you want the server as a whole wants to represent itself as. ECC is aiming for more of a "family friendly" server, so the current icons/banners look more childish. As far as my opinion goes, I share the distaste for the current banners/icons and I'd be more than glad to see new ones.

 

Thing is, you can be family friendly and have a clean and professional logo and banner. The banner & logo we had in 2013/2014 - that hides in @ChargerBoltz5's suggestion - is a good example of this.

But I digress. I'd like to see a banner and logo change, partially because I'm not a huge fan of the design, but also because I think a change could be refreshing.

 

Well, I'd say the early 2014 banner is less childish and cartoonish, though. Much more clean and better looking however.

Anyway, I agree with you on the aspect of a new logo. I personally believe a new one would be refreshing as well.

Current icon reminds me a lot of books for toddlers and younger. I understand wanting the family-friendly vibe, but maybe aim for a broader age range... As for the banner (as it is related to branding), it hits the age range of about 3-11. Again, it should it hit a broader age range when it comes to style.

Some of the best, and currently-popular styles, are generally clean and professional. No fancy fonts or font effects, and under.. eh, I'd say 6 colors (which fall into color psychology + the brand + color theory).

Server icons I see with MC are often simplistic fonts with some shine/embossing and simply high-quality image. Sometimes they don't even have fonts... Often, really. Icons and avatars are often used to show off the brand's symbol[ism], emblem, etc. ECC doesn't really have one, somehow... But if Nether Stars are a common theme, get an artist to make a customized Nether Star art - honestly, art based on a Nether Star, but not truly one and something very unique and stand-out for ECC. Use Nether Star as inspiration; use less than 35% of the concept for something unique to work on ECC's branding.

Updating the server icon would be a good step into actually branding ECC. Get ECC a symbol that is clearly ECC - an image unique to ECC that represents ECC. After that, work on the banner and perhaps any imagery and styling of the forum/website, Buycraft, etc. Investing a few hundred dollars to a professional who specializes in gaming graphic branding would do wonders, even for retaining new users. Server icon update alone would help with appeal to new users. Many people add the server long before checking the site, so if what they are seeing is bubbly font and style for a toddler's book (and doesn't match Spawn at all), it's kinda...disappointing.
