The way this will go is that a handful of people see this as a reason to start up heated debates on economics; politics; etc, which is really really silly, seeing as we're a minecraft server, with mostly kids on it, who don't understand a thing of what you're saying. If you want to debate politics, economics or whatever, then go to a website meant for debating, don't come to ECC.
While I find your statement very rude, your only causing me to get sidetracked. My personal life is none of anyone else's business. I still have yet to get one simple reason how someone can take a foot, when there's only an inch given.
It's a saying. What it means is that if you give someone a little bit of lenience, this person is likely to try and push that little bit of lenience to the limits. For example, you allow someone to behave a little bit badly, that person will behave very badly. The cambridge dictionary says "said about someone who has been given a small amount of power or freedom to do something, and then has tried to get a lot more" This is simply human nature, and most people do this. Even subconsciously. If we were to give people a little bit of freedom to debate politics, economics, etc. Then things are going to get heated and out of control, debating will quickly turn into a heated argument. I've never seen a political "debate" in any place not specifically meant for debating turn into a heated argument which literally sounded like the 2 could start fighting each other any minute. People's opinions on politics are simply too different, and what happens when 2 different opinions collide? You get an argument, and the "touchy subject" arguments are the most heated.
Thank you for the description kuke, and I understand how people would "try" and do this but...they really, "can't", do this without crossing the line/getting punished, right? I agree there shouldn't be any politics, but I still see no harm in economics.

Either way, this is my stance on the issue, I personally believe that, if possible, the rule should be abolished, but that's the thing, it /isn't/ possible, for the very same reasons as stated before, I, myself, LOVE a good debate on almost any issue! But not everyone on the server can 1. Debate with proper etiquette 2. Resist lashing out, or going drastically off topic 3. Know what they're talking about! Not everyone on the server can handle these tough discussions like abortion, war, murder, immigration, racism, and it's not our role to make them listen. I would rather have a child learn their believes off their guardians, peers, and community, then off miss informed, immature, 10 year olds, pretending that they know what they're doing! furthermore! Who would decide what's touchy and what's not! Nothing touchy for me so if I were moderating, I would be fine with talking about anything, but someone who was raised with different believes would have COMPLETELY different views on everything! And think of the flame wars! Oh the glorious flame wars! a many brave ecc'ers would die in the flame wars to come, should this rule be struck! Yet another thing moderators would have to moderate! They're busy people ya' know! TL;DR People suck at debating, miss informing everyone around, hassle to moderate, mass murder via flame wars

Hello, So here is my opinion on the idea of relaxing the touchy subjects rule. Touchy subjects have been outlawed each for their own reason. Some of them are obvious and others people may not agree with. The main one this thread seems to be talking about is Political Topics/Economics. Generally speaking when you talk about Politics you end up with a lot of psychologically motivated problems. The main one is the honest reason why fights start, which is Groupthink. Groupthink, if you wish to google it I'd understand, is the concept that when you find people who are like minded they create a 'group'. The mental position it can put a player in makes them think that their thought/concept/political group is invulnerable. Those under 'group think' influences will not accept any contradicting beliefs. Their belief is in fact strengthened when a member or group of the opposing tries to argue with them. Now why does this matter? Lets say we opened the political conversations up and about half of ECC said, "I'm a republican!" and the other half "I'm a democrat." The political conversation would result in issues beyond just fighting, but, it would start with fighting. One side would try and change the mind of the other, the other side would do the same. They would be spouting facts/half truths/political propaganda etc. Eventually the moderators would step in and stop the flame war. But then... then the real issue would set in, in my opinion. If you'd had that fight with a player and it got heated enough, you may very well not want to talk to them anymore. It really depends on the things said in that fight, but frankly, more often then not, when logic doesn't work, mean words are the next rung. Not every adult has the ability to accept that another person may have opposing beliefs. Not every adult is able to be mature and maturely argue a belief. That being said, we cannot expect that if an adult can't be mature, that the 10-16 year old player base would be capable. Next issue I noticed is that players want Real Life Economic issues to be discussable, which falls into politics. There is a main reason why Real Life Economic Issue don't always apply to ECC. The RL Government has many more issues then ECC ever will and all of those issues are based in Politics. The questions that come up in real life about what we should do economically are all rooted in Political Policy. So, to conclude, ECC needs to keep Politics out of ECC. As for economics, I totally approve of us discussing our own economic issues, but the real life ones have no bearing on ECC. Revanrose6
