I'm sure (if people in the areas affected are willing to shuffle around a bit of course) you could probably cut two to three rows of shops out from the middle (i.e. Rows 6,7,8) of each of the 4 markets. That would reduce size by 16-24 shops and up competition.
That's if you want to stay with the current format. I personally wouldn't mind the market change, but I know some current shop owners might not. My best thought would be to build a design, reveal it to the public, and get the shopowners' opinions. If you get good turnout/reviews, implement it. If not, back to the drawing board. -
As for the new format, I would welcome that as well if done the way you mention, however, experience has shown that the shop owners and public opinion is not usually requested for most of the new builds that take place here unfortunately. -

The following is just my opinion, so please dont hate:
I fell the market could follow a grid format that is less complicated in a numbering system, maybe like battleship. you could put letters across the top, and numbers down the side. so for example stall "B8" would be one row in, eight rows down.-

I'm having one of those days... -
+1! If I'm correct, the last time the market was redesigned was early 2014 by Thomasku11… Even though the market is beautiful, I feel like we're in need of a change.

Most of the shops in the market are empty because they make no money the design SUCKS At least the old one was always full

I honestly think we could just re-install our old market.
The reason why it was removed was due to sign lag. Given that in 1.8, sign lag was fixed (to a better extent), I think it's worthwhile to test the lag the old market would have on 1.8 mechanics.-

The design does leave a lot to be desired and was obviously "thrown" together in a hurry to reduce the lag we all experienced there but it does not suck imho.
I do not ever remember ever seeing the old one full - in fact what I remember is the bottom floor being basically empty (except GeneralJoeCool and his awesome shop) and very few shops on the second floor had regular owners. -
I think the old market was thrown together rather quickly, too. The layout was perfect (the size/location of the shops) but the design was not. It was dull and boring. Personally, I'd like the same layout --with better design/detail-- with one adjustment:
- remove those bottom shops (the ones directly under the primes)
-
However, we still have to have one shop on the bottom floor reserved for GeneralJoeCool :D-

So @clou44 made this a while back (a reference to the old market for people who need a refresher).
What I think would be ideal, like I said earlier, would be to remove the under ground shops, so we had less total shops in the market. Those were basically never used, and just took up space. Be eliminating them, we'd be removing more empty shops.
Also, another edit I think would be good would be a slight size increase to shops 72, 67, 19, and 24. Those are the second row of smallest prime shops on each side. Because they're the same size as those significantly close, I think it would be wise to make them somewhat closer in value by giving those shops more sign space. -
Lag was the reason we have a new one, right? I think the prime shops right now dominate the market, and people don't want to walk around 5ever to find stuff. I mean sure we have warps, but no one is gonna "/warp station1. no potatoes here. /warp station2, nope not here either." The smaller shops that are farther away from spawn really don't make any money. I had one and it costs me to keep it up because the prime shops had all the consumers. The market should be like more of a market where prices are constantly changing. Not one where you can be inactive for a week *cough username cough* and come back and collect your riches and adjust a few things.

Also, all you prime owners need to realize. You were never guranteed a spot when you paid x-million for your shop. If the market changes, oh well. :)

The way it works (correct me if I'm wrong) is only the signs you actually see/are in the chunks in front of you cause lag. Considering you just see a long line of massive shops, with up to 300 signs each, I think it would be the same type of lag the old market had.
