It's alright to disagree*, not argue. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoints now matter how silly they may seem to you, even if they oppose the suggestion. So you can disagree with something that was said, and state your reasons why you disagree, and then leave it at that, without continuous arguing.

I'd prefer the rule be removed entirely, but this is a fine middle ground. The issue here isn't that I want to swear constantly, it's that nobody should be able to forcibly change what people say to fit their own personal ideas about what is acceptable. If you don't like what someone says, ignore or mute them. In the context of this suggestion, if you don't like swearing, turn the filter on. We should recognize that because all of our preferences differ, it makes no sense to try to make people's speech conform to the preferences of just one group.

I feel like you are mixing up definitions of arguing. Having a back and forth point/counterpoint discussion is productive for both parties, and creates a path to agreement, or at least a better understanding of each other's positions. Simply posting your point of view and evidence for it fits the first definition, but neither definition indicates that it's only an argument when it's continuous. I hope you are saying people shouldn't engage in the second definition, because forbidding the first rules out productive discussion. [IMG]

The fist definition is fine, but the arguing that went on in this thread fits the second definition better. It wasn't really constructive, just either party disagreeing with the other's viewpoints, usually implying that the viewpoint is stupid or the person themselves were stupid, that's what I meant when I asked it to stop. If you can present your disagreement with someone else's opinion in a good way, without insulting each other, that's fine.

I am all for everything you said as far as it goes but this situation dissolved to personal attacks and even all caps paragraphs which is the #1 all time indication that 1. Nothing of value was being accomplished and 2. It was time for everyone to back off their keyboards and freaking relax. Debate is good and valuable but personally attacking someone to try to challenge the validity of their personal opinion is just silly.

Especially because we run this kind of by votes with reasoning added to try to back them up so it really doesn't matter how violently you disagree with one person's opinion, they still only have one vote. Just make your own point and move on.

I personally believe debate is an essential part of the community feedback and the suggestions forum itself. I definitely wouldn't want to see staff members crack down on it. If it's getting flamey, tell users they can continue debating if they do it in a respectful way, and if they don't heed these reminders, issue them forum warnings.

There's literally no reason at all to crack down on debate itself when you can crack down on things that cause issues instead, like flaming.

That's what I mean with what I said. I'm sorry if I didn't phrase it like that.

    Scratching this idea.

Anything goes in ch vip. If someone swears a lot when they rant they are probably just generally an asshole. Example: Andrewkm, he's usually an asshole. Can confirm.
