Or have it so that anything that would be classed as spammy in chat (i.e. something a mod would warn for) is not allowed in a username
Yeah, let's make it even more arbitrary, great idea. "this usernames looks kinda annoying and spammy. Ban." The rules for spam aren't even set in stone. I've seen people get warned for typing 'lmaooo'.
It would not just be down to one moderator to decide- It is likely the GA or SA team would be consulted before a ban.
That's still arbitrary. You're still having multiple staff members decide what's "spammy" or not on a personal whim than using any reason or logic. We don't even have rules/staff guidelines stating what spam even is, so how do you even expect staff to consistently enforce this?
Because Mojang is totally going to prohibit paying users who own premium accounts from changing their names to what they wish. Doubt it.
Exactly. But anyway, +0. If we don't want spammy names, then don't make it worth it for people to have them. I don't know if we should amend the rules or not but I do think that it's better to discourage rather than ban for a month. If possible, I'd like to see a day-long tempban whenever a spammy username occurs, and following that they can be nicknamed a la Turt and Austins.
But then what's spammy and what's not? Without a finite metric you're literally banning people on a whim. The ONLY solution to the issue is to stop worrying about it.
I don't think it's the only solution... but it may just be the best given how heated this argument has become.
