    I have a question regarding the /own command and a possible bypass of this fact:
    What if two users, who trust each other, use tools /own'd by the other one? This way, if I die, the ownership of my star pick won't get removed. And if anyone picks it up, my friend can always claim it back for me.
    Of course you would need to trust your friend, but regardless: is it allowed? It's basically a bypass of a mechanics that, I guess, was introduced for making tools PvP-loot-able.

    Thanks for your reply, Jamie.
    But then, giving that anyone could potentially bypass this mechanism, couldn't we just get rid of it? I would love that, and I think many people would as well.
    My wild guess is that it has been encoded on purpose, so removing it would mean to remove a portion of the code, making it simpler as well. Or was my guess inaccurate and this just emerged by itself as a by-product that will take some time and work around to remove?
    If it's doable, I might file a suggestion, should it be required

    No, it's intended and this "bypass" is something we knew could happen but we chose to ignore it in place of other pros
    @Nicit6 can elaborate

    yeah, this thread is old, but I'm the OP :D
    what if I offer the "I /own your tools for a fee and I'll claim it back for you whenever possible" service? It's basically what I asked in my first question, but the difference is that it's not just a friendly favor but an actual service and I make people pay for it: is it still legit? (I strongly assume so, however I want to be sure before starting such a business)

    Technically, legal. However...
    @Nicit6 go make a rule to deny this.

    Setting the ownership of items that aren't yours isn't allowed.

    That includes doing this for reasons such as this.

    Just ran into this problem yesterday, I killed 2 people in the end and they both had all there stuff owned by someone else. I don't know necessarily if the person sold the own for a fee or whatever but is that considered illegal/will it be considered illegal?

    Based on my understanding on the replies I got here, it's legit as long as you do it for free for a friend, while it's not legit if you do it as a service for a fee. I don't think it's a very good rule tbh, as the difference seems completely arbitrary to me and it's almost non-enforceable (I can "friendly" /own your tool for free, and you can "friendly" make a 1k donation to me).
    I think that the only logic thing to do would be to:
    • either completely get rid of the "lose ownership when dying" think;
    • or completely allow /own-ing other users' tools, as long as it's not malicious.
    Staying in this middle ground just doesn't make any sense to me.

    By the way, I have sold many enchanted /own'd tools since /own was introduced and I might have forgot to un-/own some of them. And I obviously can't remember all the /own'd tools I have sold, so how will that be deemed if any of the people I sold tools to were to die in pvp?

    Unfortunately you can't trust people to not be malicious with it, so the rule will never go that way

    People will always be able to work around the own system, personally I think the own system is defunct anyways.
    Like if your tool is owned and a player logs off with it in their inventory and gets banned, you can't get it back...
    But if it's in a chest you can...unless I'm mistaken?

    Just get rid of the system tbh, all it does is give you a false sense of security owning your tool,
    Doesn't make it any safer renting tools, cause your tools won't ever be safe renting them out, same as loans...

    I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, /own was a very good addition and it's a guarantee for your tool in at least one situation: dropped /own'd tools never despawn (if I recall correctly).
    Why get rid of something non-optimal, if it can be improved?

    I don't recall that ever being a thing. Unless it's yet another one of the many undocumented changes on ECC..

    That's entirely wrong. Own is actually one of the most used tools that have been added when a valuable tool goes missing. You don't know how much is logged, and if you did you would retract your statement.

    Though it may be useful in tracking down tools, it is faulty and now makes pvp'ing in the end pointless. People are already trading weapons/armor/tools with friends and going in the end with no fear of losing anything valuable. What's the point of killing someone if you don't get anything? I mean people will just go to SG cause at least then you have a chance of making money for killing someone. Give it time, the amount of work that will roll in for the admins to deal with will be staggering. So many people will be arguing over /own'ed items and wanting admins to get things back for them. Not to mention how your stuff gets thrown out of an anvil every so often. I've had that happen using /anvil and someone pick up the unowned stuff, luckily they were honest enough to throw it back.

    I have also loaned out my EFF7 to a good friend, with a contract stating he was to return it to a certain chests when he was not using it and he goes and gets banned. Because everyone thought that it was in his inventory, you yourself Jamie, told me:
    There are so many scenarios where players will not get back their /own'ed items... more so than how /own'ed can actually help them. I had a heck of a time getting my EFF7 back, even after the contract expired, and if it had been in my friend's inventory, I would of had to wait til he was unbanned... which if it was over 2 weeks his inventory would have gotten wiped and my Eff7 lost. Sure, the contract said he had to get me another within 2 months time, but he could also just quit and never pay it back. So /own does NOTHING for you if it's in someone's inventory and they are offline. Personally, I'm with Mission. I think it should be removed. It'll make PVP in the end worth it, fix the glitch where it throws things out of the anvil, and the admin team won't be overburdened with requests to get /own'ed items back because people are trading with friends. Sure it may have helped in some some situations, but the number of situations where /own'ed gave a false security and the person wasn't able to get something back outweighs. Jamie, I know this is your baby we're talking about, you worked hard on it and are proud of it, but it is dysfunctional and it does more cons than pros... specially now that the end is PVP.

    I've made a todo entry to discuss /own and its functionality in the coming future with the @Server Admin team.
