Recently i've been noticing that large amounts of HDD space has been being consumed by minecraft while playing on this server. To the point that the file in question will grow to the maximum size of free space left on the drive its saved in. This can cause issue with Minecraft crashing, Other apps that need swap space to function correctly, and even the OS to crash if it needs to use swap space.

I found the that the space was being lost to the latest.log file. It will grow to about 30+GB per day in some cases. So large that i can't view the text file with say notepad, or notepad++ any more.

I thought this was maybe something local to me, so i made sure to update everything and and continued to check, but it kept happening on the daily.

I checked with a few other players and they are also experiencing the same issue with their latest.log file growing to sever 10s of GBs after playing on the server for the day.

The file can be found ../.minecraft/logs/latest.log

Now you can delete the file if the game isn't running, and reclaim the space, and a temp fix is to make a empty text file with the same name, and mark the file as read only. That will prevent the minecraft client from being able to write to the file and thus prevent it from growing out of control, but this file also stores all chat history and other important information needed in troubleshooting other issues, so doing this is not a long term solution.

I am not saying this is specifically an ECC issue, but it is likely that a large number of other people on the server are running into this issue and may not know about it yet. If the 4 - 5 people i've talked to with different systems and configs have run into this issue, its likely many others are in the same boat.

I know that for servers you can pass arguments to limit the size of log files based on line number, but have not found the same for client side. That might be a better temp solution if the issue cant be isolated to something on the server in terms of some crazy runaway log event that keeps looping and thus causing that file to grow out of control.

Been having this same issue. Noticed my computer was barely running and checked activity monitor and saw my minecraft launcher was trying to eat about 100gbs of ram. I have been force quitting my minecraft launcher after startup and for some reason this allows things to run but I am still stuck with a 50gb latest log file. Not sure if this is an ECC issue or a minecraft issue but if its on ECC's end would be nice for some sort of fix.

Also to note, the file wont update the size until the game client closes.

Had this problem a few weeks ago.

Made a .exe to force write the file to 0 every 10 minutes or so. Haven't had the problem since, but also not a good workaround for those less savvy.

Not sure how else might be a workaround to alleviate the problem of this since it randomly happened

Would you mind changing your vote then? Since you do have this issue, but have used a workaround to deal with it.

No, as it hasn't been generating as massive of a file as it used to for me since a week ago roughly.

Not really sure what ticks it to stockpile everything, but currently it's behaving as normal and intended, so no, not currently effecting me.

Have also had the exact same thing happening to me. Have to keep deleting the file to boost performance back to the computer. Not overly tech savey when it comes to fixing these problems or “work around a”. Any insite to this problem would be nice. Can’t remember this happening in the past.

None of you are really providing much in terms of useful information. What does your day to day look like while generating huge logs?

Some very cursory googling shows a result that has something to do with mobs. Might not be accurate but have you all found the issue occurs while grinding spawners -- notable @FwgKing your timeframe sort of lines up with the reset, did you stop using a mob grinder when the world reset?

No actually, didn't mob farm any last month and only nwart farmed. Have been solely mob farming this month and no issue with it yet. Just seemed to randomly stop with no rhyme or reason.

A mix of Nwart farming and mobs, along with just general town building//play. Could it be the sell lines just jamming up the logs since they get captured in chat and saved in the log as such?

Doubtful as this being the sole cause as I still use the same sell macro for my mob farming, and at a higher increment than when I was nwart farming.

Maybe not, but its something thats causing it for a number of people. May spend some time to see if i can capture enough of a log with out it getting crazy large to the point i can't open it and see if i can find anything that points to why this is happening.

Can't reproduce. My logs are tiny even when my client sits AFK for hours/days on end.
Not much detailed information in this thread, and unfortunately we do not diagnose such issues for users unless there was some serious information provided that would lead to ECC being the culprit. Feel free to continue discussions and share information to find a solution! :)

So noticed I had 6 GB's in my latest.log file, however after I deleted the log the size has been small and it no longer grows to large sizes. Perhaps the file gets corrupted and keeps growing larger and larger every once in a while and it needs to be deleted? After deleting the file a few days ago all my newest logs are only getting to a few Kb in size.

Well the latest.log is supposed to be the most recent play session log. As each session generates a new log when MC is closed out, the game client is supposed to gunzip the file to compress it even further when making a new latest.log. Normally these files are only a few KB or few megs at most before they are compressed.

my latest.log was 6 GB after playing. This latest log btw lasted 4 days before a new log file was created. After it finally made a new one I deleted the old one that was still 6 GB after not being a latest.log file and now my latest.log files rarely go above a MB.

Are you just afking @andrewkm ? I think there is something that is causing it when you either farm nwarts or mob grind for several hours while selling to the server frequently that is causing these logs to generate massive amounts of data over that time. I haven't had much time to sit down and properly test either, and have just marked the file read only to prevent MC from being able to write to it.
