With the summer nearing its commencement, I think it would be a great time to start a competition to create a new spawn, as many users will be active and readily available to make the spawn.
I don't really think a new spawn should be that high up on a priority list. It's a very big project, and honestly our current spawn isn't really that bad. I'm not saying it's fantastic, but it works. The biggest detriment to new players is the fact that we have really only 1 thing that's appealing to younger players (SG) and it's, well, very very dead. I would much rather see us add some new fast paced gameplay that's appealing to younger players and will help get them involved in the main server, which is otherwise really niche gameplay.
Although I do agree with this, I don't believe that it quite means we should not get a new spawn. The spawn will be more player based, than developer/GA/SA based, meanwhile the new game modes that are desperately needed are more based with them. Also, if you don't mind, I am not trying to argue with the fact that it is a big project, but can you explain why it is so? I do the server basis to understand how taxing MC Editing things into a server as big as ECC. Edit: Also, the spawn competition was REALLY fun, and brought creativity from within myself and was a good way to make some money.
We can't really have a build comp again on that scale IMO. We just don't have players like Thomasku11, Joliver, outerlocal, etc around anymore like they used to be.
The biggest problems with build competitions is the fact that there are never enough participants. ECC is not large enough for that. You'll only get a handful of entries, and most of them are shit. It doesn't work.
If they are going to spend any amount of irl money, I think they have better priorities. As has been said, I believe that there are morethings that they should be spending their time and money on than a new spawn, like more interesting game modes to bring more Builders in
A build contest would be better IMHO: it would be costless to the server; it would require less work for staff; it would be fun for us; if nothing worth comes from, everything could still be kept as is, with no consequence.
Totally agree with this ^ If it really doesn't work out then we could always *later on* hire actual spawn builders. I bet if you created a little donation shop just for funding the new spawn if it really only costs 100-200 dollars it would be funded pretty fast.
Just assemble a small team of ECCs best builders to make a new spawn. There is no need to make it into a competition and divide the talented builders. ECC can put together a professional-like team for free.
That's no fun though. Teams could come together in the competition if they wanted to, but I feel like having a competition would be more personal than just having some people doing it. On top of that, prizes are good for everyone
The problem with competitions is the lack of competitors, and an obligation from the server to pick out of one of the available builds. So, let's assume we have 5 competitors, and all of the builds are shit. What then? You're still obligated to pick one and use it. You'll end up with yet another shitty spawn. It's better to have one built in the exact way ECC wants, than have people build different shit you might not want. Basically, better to have certainty that costs money, than free uncertainty. A paid spawn is going to be exactly what you want, a competition might have a good spawn, but odds are you won't get a good one. (spawn is more than just fancy aesthetics, most people don't realize this)
