Seven character shortname is the magic size because it allows you to:

#1 use 2 digits for your quantity sold (1-99 possible)
#2 use 4 digits for your total inventory (1-9999 possible)
#3 convey in a word/abbreviation, exactly what the block is. As opposed to being forced to use the item ID which is confusing for customers

For example, if the shortname is 8 characters, then i have to chop off a digit for either #1 or #2.
