That's not the only problem though. There are bugs in the survival games that crash servers, cause insane lag and kill people. We have the features that do the first two things disabled, but those were basically core mechanics in the plugin. (The lightning with 3 players left, for example.) Now, the walls plugin is based on the already buggy mechanics of Survival Games and on top of that, the dev isn't even actively developing it. There's also the fact that we try to minimize the amount of plugins we use, so that we don't have to worry about lag and/or conflicts between plugins. Adding plugins that do nothing just because they're fun counteracts that. We added Survival Games because it was really popular, we use it to attract players and to relieve some boredom for others. But adding more plugins/minigames will provide more cons than pros. Cons: Laggy Buggy Another plugin Requires more worlds loaded adds nothing to the server aside from a little boredom reliever. pros: It's fun to play I honestly can't think of more pros, if you have some, do tell me.
Well, there's always the fact that you can earn money from it. While you may say no, andrew didn't wait long until adding cash to SG when the suggestion forums became a bit more active. It also draws more people to the server. If i ever decided to leave ECC (a joke i know) a server with walls would affect my decision. I'm not defending this position, but there is more then 1 pro, as i pointed out.
lol, like I said you have a valid point with there begin bugs in the plugin. I was more directing to other people with less valid reasons. My thinking is the bugs would not cause any grief for the mods since the server restarts every so often. Do mods actually have to debug sg? I have not been on this server for very long, but the only bug I have seen that needs to be fixed by mods is the platform bug in arena 4 created by one of the mods, lol. The bugs in sg are self correcting because of the timed restarts right? If so, this principle should carry over to the walls. If this creates noticeable lag throughout the server it would obviously not be worth it. Looking at the specs of the server it seems nothing should lag the server (to a point obviously).
We do not debug SG personally, but that doesn't mean we want a buggy plugin. All that could cause is more complaints to us, the staff who can't do anything except hope the plugin gets updated. We aren't a mini game server and as cool as that looks it sounds like its just another mini game.
This is all speculation about the plugin being buggy. I don't think we can know how buggy it is for sure without running it. Perhaps the game could be placed somewhere away from spawn and advertised as being buggy and not to contact the staff. This could be a test run to see if it truly is bugged or not. If it was buggy or laggy, we could scrap the idea and forget it ever happened. It could be an easy way to get more people to the server without constant maintenance. I agree that we are not a mini server. My idea was not to convert the server to that. I was just thinking if it did not cause anyone any grief than why not add it. Like I said though, it it caused any kind of lag or was riddled with bugs it would not be worth it.
I would have to ask what crashed it though. It could have been the endgame thing that caused the server to crash, which would not be in the walls.
The endgame is not in the Survival Games plugin, it's a custom thing KHobbits made. This was made to fix the first crashbug, which was the lightning when there are 3 people left. (which we disabled the moment it crashed the server)
I see... The server receives a lot of money from sg. The walls would be a source of income from the players who do not like sg. This contradicts what I said previously, but I forgot about it.
Think of the lag. You would need to use tons of pistons, and the tons of sand falling. There would be a server wide lag spike when the walls dropped. EDIT:Also the redstone lamp and fast moving piston clock. Those cause lag in even a regular walls server.
Change it perhaps? Have a automated messages in chat for those who's in "the walls" instead of the big clock. I've seen different wall maps, so I assume like half the sand can be removed for less lag - or customize a map. I think I once saw one with gates instead of falling sand.
I believe it is very simple. EcoCityCraft is an ECONOMY server. Yes we have survival games, but that is simply to provide some change to the every day ECC life. We do need another mini-game. It would have the same pros and cons of SG. Yes it may be fun, but there are plenty of ways to have fun on ECC. If your bored go and PVP, venture into the mining world or play survival games.
I think there are too many ways of having fun. I want to start a petition to reduce fun by 50% on on ECC. Who is with me! As for the argument about lag, have you seen the server specs? The only way this would work is if the mods are willing. That is the only issue with adding the walls.
A powerful server is what we need for a minecraft server of this size, we're constantly optimizing and minimizing the load on the server, adding buggy plugins like the walls will only increase the load, it will limit our growth.
The two choices you have are: Adding walls - this may provide more fun to the server and allow those who already play to have a slight change whilst increasing the server load, adding lots of bugs and resulting in less players. Not adding walls - Nothing will have changed but it will mean that the server load is less, less bugs, less complaints. Staff will be able to moderate the server without complaints of bugs/lag and this would make a happier community.A happier community would invite others to join, overall making the server a better place.
