How much would this be worth on the market? been acquiring various amounts of them, and server price says only 2.50...i'm inclined to think to the average player it is more, since it takes 6 iron (at 7.50, each) to build them.

If you were thinking of selling them in a shop, they would have to be cheaper than building them.
I stockpile mine (found in mineshafts) for when I have rail projects. Making them is expensive... MUCH more than the server price allows for. However, you can find them in mineshafts pretty often.
I would buy and sell them, personally. Buy them for more than Server price ($3.50?), then sell them for around $5.00 or so. I know I would come looking for your shop if I needed rails, but not if the price was going to be much higher than that. Also, most of the time, if I rails, I don't need a stack or 2... I need a chest or 2 :)
I'd sell them from 2 signs: a 16/purchase and a 64/purchase, for the bulk buyers.
