Well it is Java. It's probably not you. Unless you put the 64 bit instead of the 32. But that's all I could think of...

Remove all versions of Java from the computer, reboot, and install the latest version of JRE 1.7 from here.

    Wait. 1.6 runtime?
    1.6 is Java 6 IIRC. ô_o
Tried java 7 or 6 until now? Old java versions are mostly/always blocked because of security reasons.

Can you explain what the actions taken to solve the problem were? In case someone in the future has this problem then they can be told how to fix it.

Sure, Java is a funny thing. You have to delete the old version in order to get a clean d/l on the new. Somehow, even after I got rid of the last version, I couln't get a good d/l from Oracle. I searched around and somehow found TWO more old versions. (Don't ask, because I have no clue where they came from) anyway, dumped the extra two (which were really old versions btw) and d/ the new and it went smooth and nice. thanks for suggesting that I go delete and try again. I would never have found those otherwise. Thanks BoomPanda!
