I thing it's time for a full server reset.

WHY THE HECK WOULD PHYS RESET THE SERVER? THAT IS CRAZY!

This will never happen. Because it will get rid of all the old players anyways.

 

In case you didn't know, nobody's holding you here. If you don't like how things are run, then quit and start your own server. Nobody's going to miss you if you keep this attitude.

 

Let'S just imagine what would happen if there actually was a server reset.
1. Many towns which people worked on for months or even years would simply disappear. Quite a few of the old players would quit.
2. Features would be gone. How would those that invested a fortune feel about that? More would quit.
3. Would there still be people donating after the reset after they just lost so much? Paying again for the features they paid for a long time ago? The server would start to lack funds.
4. Those who would stay even though they lost anything, will they still be there with the same enthusiasm as before? After realizing that whatever they build, it could be reset at any time in the future again just because a few people wanted a fresh start?

In general, a server reset might attract some new players. However, I imagine it would make a majority of the older/advanced players leave. Also, players that have stayed on ECC for a long time are more likely to donate/buy features from others IMO. A server reset would only help those who currently have nothing or not much, but greatly disadvantage those who actually invested much of their time into progressing.

When andrew resigned, player count was at 70. It's back to 130, and climbing. I don't own the server, so don't quote me here, but I think the next few years are paid for in donations already. So, the operating costs won't run into problems for years. And, since player count isn't going down, and the hub is coming out soon, and there are new things being changed and implemented daily....

Why fix something that isn't broken?

 

Players get bored regardless and the reasons are many, not just as a result of the servers offerings. Many out grow the game or have priorities change IRL etc. Minecraft is either a phase one goes through to many, if not more than most when it comes to gaming. Each year sees the release of any number of new games. Honestly how many of those are still played three years on? So yes there are a number of die hard players that hang around and this is where Minecraft differs to other games. Each player owns how involved they remain in the game, your only limitation at the end of the day is really your own imagination.

To many of the younger players, mini-games are a draw card but with most of these players, their attention span is limited before they are attracted by another title that promises entertainment. Trying to keep up with this bunch of players would be an impossible task in trying to predict what they want as well as the logistics involved in constantly keeping the server aligned with their expectations. However older players seek possibly a different return for playing the game, each to their own.

My thoughts exactly. If we reset the server every time a few players got bored, then we would - well be just like most other servers, many owned by younger players themselves.
Ecc does not appeal to everyone, and that is alright by me. Thank goodness Andrew originally (and now Phys) understand the concept of the "long attention span" instead of the "short attention span" that seems to be popular to most younger players since they are very seldom loyal to any one game or server anyway.

 

This is not something which we plan on doing, so I am going to lock this.
