Iron Pickaxes do not seem to be taking any damage when i use them. Its not the texture pack I use because i've tried different ones including the default and all show my iron pickaxe with no damage after I used it for about 50 something blocks
Something similar happened to me a while back where a tool didn't take damage for a short period of time. And no, I don't think I could be any more vague.
It seemed to be a glitch from time to time. I know someone that had the same issue, with all of their tools and armor. Once the 1.8 went through, the tools would not take any use from them (meaning they were indestructible) and any damage taken would not decrease the armor at all. It goes away after a day or two, you can always try dropping and picking up the item as well.
its an odd glitch that happens from time to time.. We don't know how or why or what to do to reproduce it. As chaney mentioned might have some to do with the transferring of items to 1.8
Honestly I want to say it is when you hit a player / non-block object a lot and break it (goes for breaking glowstone in spawn, for example), then re-logging and gaining that durability back... However, this sounds like something different. :/ That is the only experience I have with regaining/not losing durability with tools.
