I don't mean for this to turn into a flame war, and it isn't directed at any particular person. Just something I've been thinking about and wanted to point out that I don't think a lot of players realize.
I always enjoy the comments in staff applications. It's as if some people think they must post a -1 or similar argument in order to stop the stampede of staff team just itching to vote in favor of the applicant to be a moderator.
The staff team isn't stupid. Just imagine you were on the current staff team voting for new moderators. Would you vote in favor of them based solely on the quality of their application, coherent sentence structure, grammar, and understanding of the server rules? If you wouldn't vote them for staff based on the above, do you honestly think the staff team would even be considering them?
You don't need to come in and bash someone's application with a -1 or long diatribe against them because you think the staff team will vote them for moderator. As if to make sure that obviously horrible decision doesn't happen on your watch. The current staff can tell when someone will be or won't be good as a moderator, they don't need you to save them from their own imminent bad choice of moderator. They do an excellent job of picking people for staff and your comments don't really come in to play, other than to make you look silly/jealous/ignorant/abusive.

And furthermore, people can just give their opinions. You most likely are assuming they are -1. If they want to have a say in who will be leading them they can. Does it mean their opinion will count? It's like voting, really. You should do it because its a great opportunity to give a feedback but in the end unless you have something really important to say it really does not matter. -

Also, it has been stated numerous times over the years that comments on staff applications don't affect, and are not taken into consideration, when staff members choose new moderators. So no, it really doesn't matter what you put in the comments. I agree that supporting someone positively on their application will make the applicant feel good about themselves, etc. But my last sentence in my op is really the point I was trying to make. -
Anyone can use grammar and try. Can everyone be staff? No.
Staff do consider comments. They are at least looked at.
Negative comments are better in some cases. It shows how the applicant deals with them and this can show how they are and what type of staff member they can be. It's not completely useless, and you really can't expect an entire population to simply be kind especially during staff applications.-

Agent is correct, we do look at the comments, but we don't look at them the way most people would usually think, because we look at how someone handles it, not how great the comments are, or how many of them there are.-

I agree with you somewhat on this, it does show how they handle criticism. That is, as long as the criticism is not just a straight up hate filled post from someone with a grudge against the applicant who is trying to entice them into an argument. -
The comments part anyway is a massive popularity contest. Either good nor bad it has zero affect besides as kuke said, looking at how the applicant reacts.
I really don't see what you mean by hate. If they feel they are getting their voices heard so be it. A good, future mod will react to the posts saying nothing. They can contact other staff. This is the type of reaction they want and exhibit A of not handling these comments well is posting a rage thread in general. -

I realize this and their reaction to criticism IS a very good indicator of how they will react to these things if they are to become a moderator.
I've gotten a little off track with this. Put simply, I think it's just silly that players come in like they are on the front lines defending the server from bad moderator selection. When in fact the current staff has consistently shown they make excellent picks for new moderators. Which, I'm willing to bet, would still be the case even if replying to threads in the Staff Application section was completely disabled. -

Here's a recent example that serves no other purpose other than to make yourself look like a jerk and try to make the applicant feel badly about themselves.

No matter how a user thinks about the application process, and how their comments may or may not change the Staff's decision(s), I don't really see an issue with it. Only thing that bothers me is that users do not comment with any tact; at all. It is not that difficult to word a post appropriately, respectfully, and thoughtfully.
There are rules in place for commenting on Staff applications, but sometimes - based on the rude and disrespectful comments that still exist every round - it seems like the rules are not enforced as much as they should be. Although it is good to see how an applicant will handle mean users and trolls, it does not mean that these otherwise-pointless comments should go untouched by Staff (many are very bully-like, imho).
However, like some have already stated, Staff does consider comments. Even though most are pointless, trolling, bullying, flaming, et cetera... Some do hold some insight. Not everyone spews false words about a user, and sometimes there is truth (however, often inflated and twisted). Comments hold the least consideration, I'd say - or at least when I was on Staff and am voting - but they can bring about things worth looking into, if they have not been already. -

So if anything that quote reflects poorly upon the poster (me), not the applicant. It's their (my) right to express my opinion. Be it brash or harsh. Unless it is s rules violation I do see why it's a problem...
I express my opinion and frankly a lot people agree with me, if not publicly than privately.
I am trying to be more polite but sometimes I.....
