First I want to look at the usefulness of both materials in this rivalry, or in other words, how lacking your minecraft experience would be without either of them. Without cobble, we would not be able to craft the basic tools used for mining iron and then rare materials used in a multitude of things that are extremely important to the game, as well as not being able to craft cobble products such as furnaces, dispensers, etc. However, the handle of all tools is crafted from wood, as well as the "business end" of the most basic of wood tools used to harvest cobble. Wood comes from trees, and to trees grow without dirt? I shouldn't think so. So without dirt you wouldn't even be able to harvest cobble, and therefore still wouldn't be able to make cobble products and get better materials. In fact, without dirt, there would be no tools at all. In addition to this, there would be no grown food, and sheep would not be able to regrow their wool. without cobble you would still be able to craft basic wooden items and tools, but without dirt there would be nothing, just you wandering in a barren wasteland of items you cannot gather nor use. Dirt wins that round.
Lets look at building using the two materials in question. People who build with cobble are usually builders and other parties that cannot afford better materials, and structures made from cobble are frowned upon. When someone manages to make a structure that includes cobble that looks good, it's common to hear the phrase, "wow, you can even make cobble look good!". This surprised attitude is due to cobble's default state being ugly and unfriendly. When someone builds with dirt there is a purpose behind it. You're making a farm, growing grass, or one of the other many practical uses of dirt. Dirt is used when dirt is needed, not plastered over things for lack of a better material. Dirt doesn't overstay its welcome, nor is it's use banned in any town I've ever seen. Dirt wins yet again.
A few more uncategorized points. Dirt is naturally occuring, pure, and overall wonderful. Cobble is a frankenstein creation conjured up by us men, the hideous result of haphazardly glueing pieces of discarded stone back together in an indecent and failed attempt at creating a material that's worth using.
Although the last paragraph wasn't categorized into a "round", the score still remains: Dirt 2, Cobble 0.
