I was a mayor once...

The War of 1812 was fought between the British and the new nation The United States. There were 3 which were impressment of U.S. sailors, British support of Indian raids, and an embargo. This war was one of 2 incidents where the United States was invaded by a foreign army during a war. The British were able to take control of Washington D.C. on August 14, 1814 and then they proceeded to burn down the White House, shortly thereafter a horrible storm came into the city bring a tornado and destroying any supplies the British could have used, killed British soldiers, and put out the fires. At the Battle of Fort McHenry where the fort was being viciously attacked a man named Francis Scott Key wrote a poem that would later become the Star Spangled Banner. Eventually both sides were able draft the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814 officially ending the war. However unaware of the negotiations of the Treaty of Ghent, General Andrew Jackson in New Orleans fought against around 8000 British soldiers with about 3000 Americans. General Jackson won the battle and was hailed as a hero since news of the victory and of the treaty came at the same time, although the treaty came first. Since it appeared Jackson's victory won the war it became a very important factor in him becoming the 7th president of the United States.
