When I read your school’s email, a sudden wave of enjoyment and excitement overcame me. I fixated on spending my summer learning from high-quality teachers and experiencing life in college. A proper college education has always been my standard, which I intend to surpass. When taking standardized tests throughout middle and high school, I have scored significantly higher than my peers, as I tend to soar above the crowd in reading and writing skills
I first got my feet wet in 2nd grade, when I independently chose to join the Ready Writing competition, where I won multiple awards. When setting goals, I not only seek to compete with my peers, I compete with myself. If I set my mind to something, I can surpass even my best accomplishments.
My freshman year in high school was a bit rough because I moved three times. I had to convert from the Texas school system, to Virginia’s, and then to Florida’s, which mirrored what I had experienced in Texas, with seven 45 minute periods. The balancing of credits and grades from one state to another to yet another set up quite a challenge as I had to sacrifice lower scores for credits, rather than have me start my education all over Freshman year. I am adjusting and working to achieve success, despite the challenges.
History is a topic in which I take great interest. I love learning about the past, how it has brought us to where we are today. Also, I like to look at history critically and wonder what might have been if one simple event had changed. While we cannot alter the past, understanding how our society learns the lessons of our past, and using that knowledge to work towards a better society is essential. When I’m not reading articles about history, I am usually reading books and delving into philosophical debates in which I ponder the vast wonders of the universe and what life means. I spend my lunch time in the library where I either read articles or books for personal enjoyment.
While I’d love to absorb all the lessons offered in your “pre-college” program, I find myself particularly intrigued by the topics introduced in “Evil”, for more philosophical reasons. I often think about what makes “evil” or “bad” truly what they are. For example, it is hard to understand the true concept of morality and what is good or bad when a lot of our frowned upon tendencies are only offspring of our primal tendencies. In retrospect, we are only just now advancing from our primal state.
This school year has brought with it an increased craving to pursue my higher education, so I am applying for your summer pre-baccalaureate program in hopes that I may gain some higher level knowledge, as well as some insight on what college life is like so that I may spend my next two years of high school preparing for it.
I hope this experience will be the first step in the journey of my college career, that may one day lead me to my dreams and aspirations of becoming a trusted lawyer, an accomplished politician or more. The next email I read will optimistically be an acceptance letter to your program.-
