maybe because you were clicking too fast... could be on purpose to prevent lag spikes from spamming ext and trade signs maybe?
That happens when you have a glowstone dust in your inventory hand slot. So even if you are right clicking to use another item in your inventory, if you have a glowstone in that bottom slot that is highlighted, you will get that message.
