Seems saddening to me that some players are proposing abandoning global for a party chat.

Anyway, the reason why there's so many trolls in chat is partly due to inconsistency in punishments and not doing the right things to prevent it.

If we're serious about getting trolls off chat, we need to do some of the following things,

1. Start using /ch mute. While there isn't any logical difference between the two in their effectiveness with blocking chat trolls, it does deter trolls. Why? Because a /ban or /tempban gives them acknowledgement. A mute, is well, telling them to shut up - that annoys trolls.

2. Simplify the rules. Part of the reason why there's so many trolls is that the overly complex rules allows trolls to bend the rules to their liking. Simplify them, and it'll be even more hard to bend the rules. Yeah, I know there's a clause about "bending the rules" - but what constitutes as "bending" them? That rule is extremely hard to enforce.

3. Have staff enforce more consistent punishments. I'd say the largest part of the reason of why there's so many trolling in chat is because of staff not enforcing consistent punishments. When you have staff members go too "lightly" on users, you have players who break the rules more as there'll be lesser consequences and then you'll have players complain about player A not getting a harsh enough punishment. When you have "strict" moderators, you'll have players complaining in global about "BS warnings" or "My punishment was unfair!". Staff should reach a middle ground with their punishments so they can be consistent, not varying from staff member to staff member.

While you unfortunately cannot clean a 100-200 player server clean of trolls, you can however, take action regarding it and reduce the amount of them largely. And that's we should be doing. I don't want players to feel bad chatting in global - It is after all, a chat channel for everyone, not just the select few.

The problem with global is that when mods are watching the chat (See Footnote) they spend their time telling builders to talk in trade, keeping players from saying things like "nooo" cause its too spammy and watching for any words that (god forbid) could possibly have an obscure reference to politics or religion. Meanwhile players troll for hours on end, insulting other players, hackusating and other things and maybe accumulate one or two warns the entire time they are doing this.

Im not saying they dont mean well but I see the same people trolling for hours and hours every single day and I think to myself why the _ is this kid not banned .

I applaud the attempt. If I wasn't in another party, I would join. I am one of those people who leave Global just about every night I log in. I do try to put up with it, I just don't have the tolerance.

 

I didn't realise why you call it 'betterglobal' until I read this thread. What a good idea!

 

As much as I appreciate people joining staff, I really wish chat actually got moderated more often so people wouldn't even think about creating something like this.

I too find it really disappointing that we can't just have a better real global. That would obviously be the ideal case because every new player who joins the server ends up in the existing global and it is really unfortunate that they are immediately greeted by that bad side of ecc right away with the trolling and bad attitude that fills global a lot of the time. @Whammerist5's idea of a better global is the best and currently only recourse for players who get fed up with global. There are a number of good suggestions in the suggestion forum but that's really all there is besides this.

I don't think it is the staff team's fault, I see them trying. I think it is a policy issue. I think @UnitedStates2 is dead on the money, the trolls need to stop getting rewarded and acknowledged. The only thing most of the staff can seem to do is ask the trolls to stop actually draws attention to the trolling that they are doing. In fact utilizing the /ignore feature I am still often aware of much of the trolling due to seeing staff plaintively try to appeal to users to stop trolling. This open acknowledgement of powerlessness Moderators practically begging users to stop is the ultimate troll fodder you could ever concoct.

To me the very worst thing about all of this is that a few of the "trouble makers" who "ruin" global for everyone are actually people I think are really funny, fast, clever and add a lot to the community. Not when they are trolling obviously, but at other times. I truly wish that instead of any of this, instead of either needing a policy change, a staff change, or needing a completely different party chat to fill the place of the failing global, these users would just drop the trolling and bad attitude and participate in the community in the way which we all know they could if they tried.

But you know, if they aren't going to then some policy has to change. And if policy isn't going to change then I don't see any other option besides players making one for themselves.
