Andrew just recently updated render distances network-wide and increased it from 4 to 7. I do not believe it is possible to change the render distance for an individual player, nor do I think it's something ECC should be dedicating time to creating at this stage.
With the most recent improvement from 4 to 7, the render distance is sufficient, and you are able to see so quite a decent amount already. I also think allowing a wide variety of users to have different render distances across all our different servers will result in lag for the server due to all the different chunk sizes and distances loading network-wide.
At most, they could look at increasing the render distance even more network-wide, but I don't think it's something that can/should be done for individuals players at this time. Great suggestion though <3-

From my testing of render distance when it was increased a few months back, while the server distance is about 10 chunks (i.e. you can see 10 chunks), only 4 out in each direction actually exist, or are "ticking chunks" (i.e. crops grow)
This differentiation between the two types of chunks (ticking and fake chunks) would probably be a huge development project, and realistically only the fake chunk limit would end up being expanded (as I imagine increasing ticking chunk range is more server intensive)
There are ways to cache chunks client side with mods like optifine, which again, is what I refer to as "fake chunks". With this, I can easily keep a 400x400 land area loaded client side (even though only about 100x100 diamond is actually ticking and "real")
