Racial Slurs should never be allowed. They cross the line. There's swearing and then there's being racist and discriminating against someone because of something they can't help (i.e. colour). If racial slurs are allowed, I can see a lot of uproar and people leaving the server.

Jamie has already stated that he's planing on blocking racial slurs regardless of whether you have swearing disabled or not.

To be honest, you have to make a conscious decision to type an outburst. Sure, it's understandable that if cursing is something you do in your normal life, then you would "outburst" vocally. But to take the time to type it? No, that's not understandable. It's your server, but I don't believe the "it's understandable" when it comes to taking the time to type a curse word. The rule may be painful for mods, but at the same time, it wouldn't be if people were following the very simple rule: no cursing. If they can't follow the rules, then skip the warn and give them a 7 day. Show you're serious about enforcing your rules, especially those that result in the community you have here.

Also, I'm one of your oldest members (by age, not membership), and curse in my personal life. But you've never seen me use any curse-words in global because I follow your rules and respect the community I'm a member of.

I dont really think people take the time to type a curse word. A lot of players have pretty fast typing speeds and to type oh f*** after dying in SG isn't an intention to cuss and it is typed in under a second. Its just people talking in chat as they would IRL.

With an optional swearing filter, staff won't have to worry about warning/handling players who swear (Unless it's excessive), players who dislike swearing won't have to see and players who are fine with swearing have the ability to swear. It's a win-win for everyone.

By all means, just make sure there is a proper contact method for people to request words to be added. The reason why almost nothing uses swearing and vulgarity filters is because there are thousands of ways to type things and hundreds more words. (That's not counting other languages' versions of words.) So if someone isn't constantly on top of reports/requests to add everything under the sun that is obviously a "bad word" in disguise (including typos) people will still be pissed anyway and the filter will be almost useless.

I believe it's already approved (twitter) but yeah... definitely a good solution.

    Good idea :D

I think it'd be funny if there were an option to change specific words to other words if possible :p

The whole swearing rule and swear filter is on hold until we get 1.9 bug-free and stable.
Afterwards rest assured we'll come back to this, add a filter, and continue with the rule change.

And yes the filter will be on by default.

This is possible with a number of plugins, and had endless fun with it on my old public server. If someone typed "I'm bored" into chat it change the word 'bored' to "funny" and that is what everyone saw. Numerous swear words were also set to be changed, mostly meaning opposite to the expression the player had intended.

As one of the biggest proponents behind much more lenient swearing rules, this seems to be the only solution; an optional filter that is automatically put on when one joins the server for the first time, and then can be toggled on and off.

In my opinion, that is the only way to satisfy both parties before an inevitable totalitarian speech code would have to be enforced.

    +1 for option filter.

I have a question: supposing the feature to opt out of the swear filter in the same fashion that you could opt out of SG messages is implemented; would the opt-out be persistent or would you have to re-opt out every time you join, as is the case with SG messages?

The opt out should be persistent, otherwise it's literally useless.

It won't be useless. If you guys can take the step to swear, you can take the step to type the command. I believe andrew is trying to cater to the masses here, and by the looks of things, it sounds like this is the bestway to go about things.

That logic makes no sense. If I want to opt out I damn well don't want to have to type yet another command every time I log on. (on top of lot messages, sg messages, dtag, fly on, etc)

Usability is important, having to type 5 commands when I log on is poor usability.

Also, why should we do it the way you want just becuasd you want it that way?
