[IMPORTANT]
Before we dive into this we need to first make sure everything we're about to do can be reversed without permanently corrupting or potentially losing your own saved worlds or worse. So go ahead and copy the entire "Minecraft" folder and Rename it something like MinecraftBackup and keep it safe. (NOTE: Your minecraft folder stores screenshots , world saves, and much more. Do not skip this step!)

• For PC Users go to the START menu, open search, and type in: %appdata%\.minecraft\versions
• For Mac Users go to /Users/AndrewKm/Library/Application Support/minecraft/versions

Now right click the folder name 1.6.1 and hit copy then paste the folder below it. If done right you should have two 1.6.1 folders identical to the example above.
Right click the folder you just pasted and name it whatever you'd like. For this example I'll be putting "REI's Mini Map Mod" in there so I'll call it, REI in all CAPS since this does matter and will not work if there are differing values.

Double click your folder now and you should see two files. 1.6.1.jar and 1.6.1.json
We simply need to match our the names before each period to match exactly what we named our folder a moment ago. So they'd look like this: REI.jar and REI.json



Now we'll need to edit the REI.json file with a text editor of any kind and edit the script near the top. All you need to do is CHANGE "id:" "1.6.1" into"id:" "REI"
So that it looks like this:


Rename the REI.jar to REI.zip
Now use either 7zip, winrar, or alternatively for macs you guys can just double click it to extract the files into a folder next to it. You can then use this folder to place as many mods as you'd like into it effectively making your own mod packs which you can switch in the client but only
AFTER you download and place all files from modloader into the folder. Again AFTER you install modloader. The priority does matter and in sequence would be ModLoader, REI's Map, then last Optifine which is the main reason for this guide since so far the biggest hit to performance has been Optifinein development. So this way you'll be ready to throw it in there and go once it is released.

The Only other thing you'll have to do is rezip the folder with the mods inside than rename it with the extension .jar and you're all set!

(Note: Mod Loader 1.6.1. Is out as Is REI's mini map mod and Forge which can all be updated to work with minecrafts new launcher using the methods laid out in this thread. So far I've heard nothing about Macro Mod but Optifine is about to be released and you can follow its progress

Rockboy thanks! and I agree with the picture idea. I think the moment text comes off as stuffy clumps people get overwhelmed. Images would help keep it spread out and relatable. I may do that today.
Tdogg this guide also utilizes a way to bake your own mod packs within one .zip/.jar. as well as eliminating the need for a loader that acts as a full launcher when alternatively you could now just use something like modloader and both launchers would look the same.

On top of all that tdogg the steps taken to set this up versus the steps it would take to (Install, Update, Still have to learn about .jars, Patch, and so on are substantial. This is a one time setup that once done requires no interaction until updates which will just involve you dragging the new file into the .jar's you just made.
