    i have the following issues

    -the text in minecraft for me is all squished together
    -i don't know where in the launcher where i can switch versions
    -i cant download mods

    Are you using the default texture pack?
    To switch versions, you can click "New Profile" then go to "Use version:" and pick the version you's like to use.
    Most people do not know how to download mods. I would look at the mod's website for a tutorial.

    thanks for the help ryan, i managed to work out most of the knicks.
    (still need mods though, i'm going into withdraw without my better sprint)
