When you're talking about an expression like this, it's not about knowing them. They can be any number you choose. We can make claims about what is or is not possible. There are an infinite number of possible combination of numbers that make it untrue, and there are just as many where the expression is true. You can simplify it surely, but only in order to make it easier to write about the rules of the equation. The fact is, it can be true and it can be untrue depending on the value of the variables, so it's simply wrong to plainly state that it's untrue. 3x can equal 2y if x=4 and y=6.
