yes its the farming part of cactus that causes lag not the placing of it (i think) so if u made it a decorative block only it might work because...
the nether is full of fire/lava and hostile mobs if you stay in there for long periods of time or afk you will die anyways no matter if there is...
he did the same thing with eco dollars ..... when the eco's per 10$ went up he gave the people who had donated for eco$ in the past the extra...
