Did you migrate your account to a mojang account? That could be the problem. Cause then you would have to use your email to log in.

Yep. My computer is a little less laggy than yours so it doesn't just lag "stop", but I do get a delay before sprinting and after sprinting....
I believe sprinting got nerfed in 1.6.1, this happens in single player as well as multi.
