Literature meanings may be the same.

My theory is they make the sound from their name. For instance , a pikachu says 'Pika' . If it was to be named after it sound, its name would be Pika, not pikachu

Interesting view on the subject, but we have to admit that its name has to be related to his sound. And btw, pikachus do go pikachu sometimes, but mostly when attacking.
