Hey guys and girls i basically have 2 questions/suggestions... #1 what is an afk machine (does afk mining cobble count as afk machine? when i put something heavy on my mouse and it mines) -> imo this should be allowed but im not sure if everyone (including staff) knows for sure if it is or not! #2 where is the line between feature and glitch (Rule #14 on /rules page 2) ??!?! https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-4239 <--- this is a bug report about the "Obby generator" and it is already confirmed to be a bug + fixed from snapshot 14w25b! but i see this kind of obby generator on many islands -> the rule needs to be changed/clarified! I think you can lego, but I'm sure it breaks the spirit of the no afk machine rule, so you would probably be asked to take it apart. So I better get a move on if I want to finish my gold farm... on a unrelated note, anyone selling string/obsidian? =P
From my understanding of the rules you can AFK mine for the amount of time your allowed to be AFK (i think its around 20-30 minutes) before you are kicked. An AFK machine is shown on the video Pip_Xanadu posted and is a way to stay after that 20-30 minute "AFK time limit" has been passed because it keeps you moving, this lag's the server for everyone and well leads to a bad playing experience for not really any reason. "Can't you make a AFK machine with minecarts ?" mmm kinda. From my understanding of clearlag every time there was clearlag the minecart would be removed making it a very poor AFK machine. Also the feature and glitch line isn't very clear but that's why we ask staff from what I know so far you can exploit the Obby generator (redstone+string) until a time at which it is patched. I think they mean glitches such as those that let you fly or those that let you eat while running at full speed (in PVP) because these harm the gaming experience for others. I hope this gets clarified for you but theirs almost always staff online who you can ask these questions too before your about to break a rule!
the answer Pip gave (AFK machines) was fine for me. but i'd still prefer an "official" statement over a guess from members about how the rules "should be in their opinion", because that's just not was i was asking. So if a staff member posts here "you can build obby gen with string, but we dont allow you to use other glitches of that kind" i'd know i can make an obby gen without getting banned for no reason (i got banned once for something similar) and i'd also know i cant use other glitches to make broken/mossy stone bricks or podzol or other stuff....!
You can make a string/redstone obby gen. Staff have them and its openly been discussed with staff members present and they have not objected or banned these players (my answer wasn't just for your benefit though people having similar issue often look the forums before asking to see if there question has already been answered). Right now I am suggesting clearer rules to be added into the forums (but keeping those in game the same) so that issues like this have clear black and white explanations, my suggestion thread is here.
