There is also farming (most crops), survival games, doing jobs for people, and other ways to mine (main world, mining world; straight lines, strip mining; selling to server, to users, to user shops; etc). I wouldn't say there is a "best" way to make money, but there are better ways. Many people farm melons, pumpkins, and wheat, go mining, and sell plots in their towns. Some manage to make good money off of survival games - especially with today's income increases on it.
I'd recommend one of the two; pumpkin farming or mining. I'll list the benefits of the two. Mining: Almost no start up cost, and is therefore the easiest way for newer players. If you're going to mine, dig down to Y: 11 and strip mine. I'm not sure what your pick situation is, but I recommend using your best pick, and once you get 30 lvls from mining, enchant another diamond Pickaxe. Continue this until you get an Efficiency 4, Fortune 3 Pick, then sell the exp you make from that point on. With the Fort/Eff pick you'll be able to make around 10k an hour, which is pretty decent. The downfall is you have to watch out for lava and such, or risk dying and losing all your progress. Pumpkin Farming: This is another good way to get money starting out, but requires a much larger start up cost than Mining does. You'll need to buy a pumpkin axe from other players, so that's generally around 7k, and then get access to a large farm, which could cost as much as 10k. In addition to this, both mining and pump farming make about the same (farming even less mainly) but it does give you a large degree of safety compared to mining, as well as consistent cash flow. I got Mayor and 175$ of Donation features, and then some from mining. That is the method I would recommend until you can get your hands on some netherstars tools, good luck!
