What i've gathered is that its pretty much a place to build random stuff without it clogging up your town. Unfortunately, theres no real landmarks, and it seems unkept and abandoned. What is okay to build and what is not? I dont know if I can build or destroy landscape to build for fear of angering another user. It just seems strange to me... and whats the point?
Just like you stated, "a place to build random stuff without it clogging up your town." That's really what it's for. There empty space, just got to look for it!
I have not purchased entrance to the aether yet, but I should think it to be a cool expansive place to make larger scale builds.
Aether wasn't always as... depressing as it is now. Before the world refresh, it was full of some really cool builds, however now it's pretty unorganized and sporadic. Previously, it was an awesome place for huge builds that you didn't see in normal towns. There just seems to have been a decline in interest in the Aether with all the new 1.7 stuff to explore. If you look at the application section of the forums, there's barely been any new Pilots over the course of the last month, which shows how interest has shifted away from Aether. The point of the Aether? Well, I really don't have a definitive answer to that, but from what I've drawn from it so far is this; it's a building world where you do not have to have the slightest worry about griefing/financial problems required in getting a town region where you can build privately. You can build a massive castle in the Aether without having to spend 200k on a private town to put it on. It also is a world purely based on what the community makes out of it. There's no spawn or protected 200x200 regions for a select few people; it's all up to the players to make it something great. This, in my opinion, if the beauty of the Aether. Players of ECC can essentially build side by side in the Aether, and with some direction and organization, have the opportunity to create things that wouldn't be possible in the Main World. For now, it's pretty barren, but I believe it can be made into something great again if some dedicated players really set their minds to it, and I'm really looking forward to that in the future.

The aether is actually a lot more awesome atm then you guys are saying ;-;. There was an aether contest in which people were encouraged to make beautiful builds that also helped people get from island to island. The way that the aether is now is pretty and most of the time function. Frankly, the current aether is significantly better than the last one. For those who don't know, the last aether was covered in farms. Farms got made illegal in the aether, but, the aether itself was never fully cleaned up. So the old aether was littered in abandoned farms and the areas were mined out. This aether is much better. As for the purpose. It is where you can build large structures and not be worried about grief.
Even extremely minor grief is a banable offense in the aether. Further, grief in the aether could result in the loss of access to the aether.
Its a builder world. Its a place for building without worry of grief because all grief gets rolled back in the aether.
My friend has aether access. I went over to his house the other day, and he showed me around. It was a really cool place, and it had lots of great builds, as revan was saying.
As far as I've heard the aether isn't even the real aether from the mod, but only a flying islands world out of grass, stone and ores. I don't know if it's true, but if it is I can understand why so few people are signing up. It would be far more interesting with all the aether ores, blocks and mobs! -314 a.k.a. Pi-
It isn't the aether mod, it is a sky world where people can build and be creative, it isn't meant to be a mob farming area or area to mine.
I've just obtained my Pilot's License (lol) and have been exploring a bit. I would love to build a place in there as a nice spot to relax and just socialize for people. Like a hotel/social club. If anyone has any ideas or tips please feel free to message me.
Just make sure to claim you land, and also don't be a massive hog and take up a massive area. As soon as you claim an area and build on it, it's yours.
Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning anything massive in area. Just a nice resort building with multiple floors upward and a basement pool room. more up then around. But not just for me or friends either. A place to go and chill, talk, craft, cook or swim. A peaceful area to discuss things or just hang out.
