I am new to using vent but I have noticed that alot of swearing and talking about off topics go in vent. I know that the game mods, supermods etc are very busy in game and I would like to suggest that you have vent mods. They have no mod abilities in game they are there just for ventrilo. I had to PM a mod to come into vent the other night as swearing was going on and talking about hacks, I did say something about the swearing and I was told not to mini mod. This I do understand but I think maybe just to have vent mods would be a good idea. I have not applied for mod as I am dyslexic and my typing skills are not very good, which is why I have joined vent as I can push a button and speak. I have helped people on vent on the short time I have been using this. I think vent is a great idea and I would not like to see it ruined by the few people that spoil the experience for others. Thanks for taking the time to read this
I agree 10000% here, I often join ventrilo, all I heat is swearing, kids screaming, kids with extremely bad mics, we really need some sort of overhaul to our ventrilo services
I agree, I think Ventrillo Moderators would also give more people the chance to join the ECC staff team.
Thing with specific-area Staff/Moderators is power abuse, boosted egos, and having to moderator the specific-area Moderators (more work than needed). As well, Ventrilo has very black-and-white commands; it could be a little messy trying to make a specific rank of "Ventrilo Moderator" without giving them commands to add users, change channel names, give channels passwords, etc. Although it could be a good idea, in the end it could be too messy / time consuming / difficult to control. If you need a Staff member in a channel, message us in-game or on Ventrilo. Even if we are in the AFK channel, we can still be there - it is really a "I need Ventrilo to be quiet at the moment, but I am available for messaging." If no one is available, you can always move to a different channel.
I disagree, and heres why. When a mod joins a channel players either A) Shut up completely B) Continue on (because they weren't doing anything wrong) or C) change channels. What we really need is for moderators to have temporary undercover accounts.
When Ventrilo finally got rules and went through a whole change, Andrew almost did that (with recording, though) and people were absolutely terrified of Ventrilo and speaking.
When I was staff, I felt like I was... I guess.... "trusted"? And most users were fine continuing any topic, perhaps they're just nervous about talking with a figure of authority but hey, I dun mind being secret vent staff
This is a very interesting post, and the problem with solving it is that there isn't a clear solution that will solve all our problems here. The first one being that of calling a moderator into the channel, is that any user that was doing something wrong becomes quiet, and some users that aren't doing anything wrong do too. From my experience, the best way to make a vent channel silent is to join it as a Staff Member. The "undercover" mods sounds like a good idea, however I see a problem. It would require a new account, and once it gets around to users that the Staff Team are using it, wouldn't that make them scared to talk to new, unknown users, for fear of them being a Staff Member? While I think this idea is the best of the currently proposed ideas, it is far from being flawless. For having certain members being promoted to "Ventrilo Mods", it will be mostly the same issue has a normal Staff Member moving into the vent channel. I would also look at what Moofink said already for this topic as she summed it up better than I can. While I do agree something needs to be done, the solution is not something that is easily found. Every change has possible negatives that may even make a situation worse. For now if there is an issue going on in vent, either get a staff member in-game, or poke one of the Staff in the Staff afk channel if it is needed. While I may not be on Vent much, I normally leave myself in the Afk channel so users can contact me if I am needed.
On the point of undercover Vent Staff: I am actually against this, despite it being the best option available. My reason for being against it is about privacy. We as ECC are about as much user privacy as we can get, and I believe that being sneaky just to find rule breakers is completely against what we try to strive for. I do have one idea to maybe cut-back on Ventrilo rules / Staff being "so harsh and scary," but I am highly doubting it would take on and could - maybe - cause its own problems. So for now, I think the best thing is for users to realize that Staff are just trying to keep Ventrilo clean for young users, on-topic for the server, and with no discussions of adult content, etc. We do not mean to be "scary" or "harsh," but we do want to keep Ventrilo a safe place for everyone to chat. As well, we are people, too - we would love to chat with you all, but if you go silent when we go into a channel, we can't chat with you!
