andrewkm, I understand why you made the decision to outlaw redstone light farming. However, this law does not attack the the problem itself; it attacks only another cause of the problem. The problem is server lag, which from what you have written, seems to be caused by large changes that are activated by redstone, whether from pistons, lighting, or anything else. Instead of outlawing aspects of redstone themselves, outlaw the concentration and mass production of these devices and any other causes of the lag. The mass production causes the lag, not the items themselves. For example, presume a user builds 10,000 mine cart tracks that send 10,000 mine carts in a straight line, leading to the crashing of the server. Is the right approach to outlaw mine carts and their tracks? Should all the cool roller coasters that have been built by users be torn down to prevent someone's 10,000 mine carts from pushing forward? The only reason this hasn't been done already is because it doesn't profit anyone do build 10,000 mine cart tracks (yet). Once again, the problem is not the redstone, it is the mass production of such creations. The same example could be used with firework fields or redstone loops. Redstone is one of the most interesting and complex aspects of Minecraft, and there is much learning to be gleaned from it. Lack of discretion in how the legislation is done threatens to destroy this, so here are some suggestions on how to legislate in a way that still preserves this interesting part of the game. There may be others as well. These will allow people to build smaller yet more interesting builds without leading to server lag. 1) Triggers (such as buttons, switches, or pressure plates) can only affect a certain number of lights, pistons, or mine carts, simultaneously. Set this number based on the specifications of your server. 2) Crashing the server with massive builds results in a short ban. (I like this idea of yours.) 3) Outlaw causes of massive lags spikes. If a user questions if their creation causes lag. Set up a time for testing. If you continue to legislate this way, your path is leading to the outlawing of dispensers, fireworks, mine carts, and redstone in general. I think the community is strong and intelligent enough to find ways to profit from redstone while not affecting server lag, and I think it likely you will see this if you work with the community to produce such creations. Furthermore, working around server lag from redstone encourages creativity and collaboration around redstone use. Please consider an alternative way of handling this. --Walker
+1 At this rate pumpkin and melon farming, signs, fireworks, Redstone, water flow and all mobs will be made illegal.
-1 Andrew made this law because there were people with massive light farms crashing the server multiple times on harvest. This is not made to outlaw what causes tiny lag. Andrew made this rule to prevent further crashes
My apologies for not understanding the source of the lag. However, the same argument could apply to the game code as well.
It's funny how andrew and the mods always blame minecraft and mojang for the lag. Minecraft could be better written to cause less lag, yes, you could also use a supper computer and have less lag. It works both ways. I know ecc has good hardware but I think ecc is being to ambitious.
Would you want the server crashing frequently and never being on for more than 10 minutes? This is about what it does to the server, and almost nothing to do with prices.
I would prefer if you did not stereotype us all. Every staff member has different views on the events and matters. Some of us voice then, some of us keep our views more private. It’s a choice we all make.
I think people are missing the point here. I'm not saying that things should go back the way they were. I'm also not trying to say that there isn't a problem. What I'm saying is that I think there is a better way to address the problem. That way is to attack the sources of lag themselves (in this case mass production) instead of attacking the (redstone) game elements that cause the lag.
Agreed at Walker. We could use more tinkering and less nerfing with the force of a thousand suns. If large light-harvest farms are the issue, ban them. But smaller setups? I've been running a small light-harvest farm forever with no issues. There's no reason for legitimate users to be penalized for excessive setups. I understand that it may be difficult to determine the exact threshold at which lag becomes an issue, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be attempted. Start small (say, four chunks maximum) and keep adjusting it upward until you hit the point at which lag becomes an issue. Then drop it down a bit for some wiggle room. But banning it outright? That's like making Coca-Cola illegal because some women in England drank 10 liters a day and died of a caffeine-induced heart attack. Sure, too much of a good thing can be a problem, but does that mean even small amounts must also be done away with?
I'm not sure this would work. Unless you have extremely detailed rules on building them, and extremely active people watching out for this, it would cause the same problem. You would need something like this: " Number x Number farms, Number stories high, Number blocks apart from other lamp farms" It's a lot easier (but less fun) to outlaw them completely. What if 2-3 people all harvested their farms at the same time? (easily could if they knew each other in real life, no one would know) Playing on a giant fun awesome server costs something. Smaller servers = less people, less fun, more freedom to do lag inducing stuff. Giant servers = tons of people, tons of fun, less freedom to do lag inducing stuff. Giant servers have to sacrafice some things to keep the server going. Would you rather go back to clicking the refresh button and then rushing to the connect button because the server only allows 100-200 players on?
This the same thing I stated in the first post, me I'm glad I'm not the only one who share this opinion. I feel like there can be some size cap on how big the farms can be. I have been running my own farm for over 5 months on this server, and it has never caused an issue.
and i just started to build my wheat farm lol lucky it was only small tower TBH i think mobs cause majority of lag and crashes too let disable them please i know of a few spawners that after 5mins standing there mine world lags this puts alot of pressure on all worlds and server as whole i also dont understand the nerf of the price that went with it [but meh] as now we have to use water im sure soon water will cause lag too ..
