First view-distance integer (3-15) Default Value: 10 Sets the amount of world data the server sends the client, measured in chunks in each direction of the player. It determines the server-side viewing distance. The "Far" viewing distance is 9 chunks, sending 441 total chunks (the amount of chunks that the server will load can be seen in the debug screen). 10 is the default/recommended. Tip: if you have major lag, reduce this value. Second Create a warp/tp location that is accessible to all players. This warp will be used for players to sell/trade etc. Currently, many players will perform trades at the spawn tower. This excessive, and unnecessary traffic to this location will surely cause lag. This in turn scares away new players (at least to some degree) because of the immediate presence of lag upon joining the server. This warp could be something /trade and be far away from spawn. Third---idea/rant Minecraft is very VERY intensive on hard drive read/writes. This poses the following questions to server admins... Do you reduce the player limit (thus reducing the number of simultaneous read/writes)? Do you Consistently work to acquire (within your means) newer, better, faster SSD drives to use in a raid 0 configuration? What about scheduling frequent server reboots (actually completely stopping the process and NOT using the stupid built in shutdown/restart option) like every x number of hours?
The second suggestion is really why I came to post on the forums, but I thought of, and added the others once I got here.
Going to move this to Suggestions. Andrew has already severely limited the view/chunk distance thing. It highly upset people, but he had to do it to reduce lag. I think he had to lower it to around 3 or 4.. Not positive on what number, though. Spawn is so laggy due to the (likely, by now) 100+ portals sitting around. TBH, I think he needs to make a new.. spawn and spawn location. Or, for the most part, make the portals far, far away from spawn. :/ As for upgrading the server and such... He is doing that constantly; always getting new hardware when possible. Few days ago he said he works around 12+ hours on the server daily, and is always trying his best to find ways to reduce lag and upgrade things so they work better. ..I have no idea what he does with the shutdown/restart stuff. Usually in the evening he shuts down the server fully (from what I've gathered) when he does daily/every other day or so updates on plugins and such. Every few hours might upset users more than the lag that appears sometimes.
Ever few hours ^like moofink said would upset some most likely afk farmers and pvpers (and I guess flyers that have half hp all the time since when server resets turns off my fly and speed)
