    Suggestion:
I suggest that EcoCityCraft implements something to deter or prevent users, specifically new players, from using vulgar language.
    Reason:
Every day that I play on EcoCity, I see at least one player log on seemingly for the sole purpose of swearing at everyone on the server. I know that there are many young players on this server; my seven-year-old brother plays. I don't like kids that age being exposed to this kind of language.
    Other Information:
I have a few ideas for how this could work:
    1) A chat filter could be added.
Pros: Near-total prevention of vulgar language.
Cons: Many filters also catch common words that contain swear words.

Many chat filters are very easily bypassed.
    2) A new area with chat disabled could be built in which players would spawn upon there first log-in, with a path to the regular spawn with the rules on signs.
Pros: This could provide an opportunity for brand-new players to more easily learn the rules.
This would prevent some of the builderspam from new players logging on just to swear or advertise.
Cons: Not being able to chat upon a first log-in may deter some players from playing on the server.
This would have to actually be built.

If you're talking about a chat filter such as one where it changes the swear word into something else, or something like that, I would have to disagree; simply because the rules counter this.
Also, the part you stated where new players cannot chat at spawn; spawn is where new players ask questions, such as how to talk in global chat, and how to get started.

However, I do like your ideas, just there's many flaws.

I think a chat filter could be good. Because there is no point whatsoever to use the excuse "Young children play on the server." When people are going around using abbreviations like "wtf" or people are slipping-up all the time.

You might as well use a filter, so when people do slip-up, at least no one else has to see it.

If you don't want your brother exposed to that kind of language then don't let him on the internet!, simple.

Though said crudely, he is correct.

The internet is filled with language like this, in fact, EcoCityCraft is one of the cleanest places on the internet.

Yes I can agree, it is one of the upper standing places. Not that close to the top, but yes, pretty close. This would give it that extra bump.

I'm strongly against automatic filtering of bad language.

I could give you all kinds of reasons, but the main reason is that it does absolutely nothing.
People will simply circumvent it by misspelling words, using symbols instead of letters and even using completely different swearwords. Leaving Andrew with adding a new word or misspelling to the filter.
That's hundreds and hundreds of words and misspellings, and that's only counting the most used words, there are also hundreds of words/slang that fall under the category "swearing".
Every time the filter gets updated someone will misspell it differently or use a new word, exposing children to an even more broad spectrum of swearing and leaving moderators to do the exact same thing as they did before, which is warning people and enforcing it manually.

TL;DR: a filter for words is a lot of work for literally no change.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you kuke. If we're thinking logically here, eventually we will clear all the words, or eventually the misspellings and ect, won't even resemble the swear words enough to be bothered with.

TL;DR: give me another reason why not.

You only read half of what I said. I also said there were hundreds of actual words that were bad, all this would do is broaden someone's swear vocabulary.

I find it slightly offensive you would assume to tell me what I did or did not do, as I did read your whole post.
    But I will forget it.

I still think ECC should have one of these, and broadening your vocabulary is not going to be a major issues. Just because we see 15 variations of one swear word, does not mean I'm going to learn any more words then I do now.

I find it disconcerting that you read what I say and completely ignore my most valid points and only pick out the ones that you have something to say against. That's not how you convince someone.

    Back to this.
You are correct, eventually all of those things will be filtered out, but have you given it any thought about how long that would take and how much work that would be? And who would have to do it?
It's a whole load of work, and it would change nothing until it's like a year later, and at that point it would still be incredibly ineffective. And yes, I'm aware that you can find lists of swears on the internet, but they're all incomplete and all stuff you can easily think off.

And seeing as I'm not able to convince you with my main argument, so I'm going to give you more.

Have you ever been to a school playground? Have you ever listened to what the kids all say at school?
Swearing has become a part of the lifestyle of younger children, it's still frowned upon by a lot of people, but it's also widely used as a way to enhance an image. We keep it clean on ECC because lots of parents don't want their children exposed to such coarse language, but that doesn't mean we should filter it out, a little bit of swear is healthy, it's something you say when something goes wrong, or when you hurt yourself, it's normal(It's actually proven to ease the pain). Kids get taught not to use swear words because we warn people for it. It's a lesson.

Which brings me to my second point, swearing isn't filtered in real life, no one can avoid swearing, the only way you can learn about swearing is from example. Which means that if we tell people off, kids will understand that it's not okay to swear. And if they do repeat the words outside of the game, their parents or family will tell them off and teach them that swearing is bad, this is an extremely valuable lesson, and they won't learn that lesson from being sheltered.

Even if it takes a while, I'd still prefer it. Your never going to convince me that any swearing is good, healthy, normal, or shouldn't be filtered on ECC, no matter the time.

And no, I have not been to school, as I am homeschooled. I'm also afraid that I do not swear, have never sworn, and plan not to. And if we are going to debate if it is "healthy" or "normal" or not, we'll need to take it off ECC, where debating rules are less strict.

There is no debate if it is "healthy" or "normal". It is not healthy or normal whatsoever.

Either way, this is going a bit too far, the thread is going off course.

In the meantime, I'm for this idea.

Shall we put this behind us for now?

    Well, this explains a lot.
If you are seriously that offended then download a client mod which filters chat for swearing, and don't forget to download a filter for your browser.

    I'm not offended.
And the many difficulties with a filter is why I suggested the other thing as well.

A simpler solution would just be to make the chat filter yourself like mentioned above. :D

I was unaware there were such chat filers. I try not to bother with mods and such, but this is something I may look into. Thank's minecrafter.

Mods could possibly do /mute if that is possible to prevent them from chatting for like 5 minutes or so

People, I realize that the internet is not a clean place. But what's wrong with making EcoCity chat a bit cleaner? I'm trying to think of solutions, and the two I posted are the best I could come up with.

Not everybody can do this. Such as the very young players who play on this server.

Why give those kids more words for their vocabulary?

And then their parents will probably not let them play on ECC anymore. Which means we lose players.
