Change the following rule to either disallow swearing completely in any chat. Specify chats that you can not swear in at all such as global, trade, auction, nether etc. Or allow moderate swearing in all chats. At the moment the rule is very vague and could be confusing. Clause 2 - Vulgarity Inappropriate and vulgar language is not allowed. This includes anything put on signs, said in chat, written in books, renamed to on items (see Section 3 Clause 2.1), spelt out in blocks (see Section 2, Clause 2.1), or any other way of communicating. Occasional mild to moderate vulgarities that are not directed at anyone (such as "slip-ups" or saying them in the incorrect chat by accident), self-censorship of a swear word or abbreviations that may imply a swear word (eg. WTF?) are allowed unless it is directed at another user. Repeated or excessive swearing, and especially vulgar language directed at anyone, is not tolerated under any circumstance. Racist language or prejudicial language of any sort falls under the vulgarity rule, and is considered a very serious offence, punishment of which may not warrant a warning before being given a ban,
My personal view on this... The problem I have with swearing is that it is simply being used instead of appropriate, eloquent ways to express oneself without breaking any etiquettes. (And no, it's not that hard.) Although personally I would like to see players voluntarily using proper language, I agree there could be a better defined rule about that, although I am not sure what to vote for.
From what I can tell the people who are against and the people who are for swearing is roughly split 50/50. Change the rule from what it is, and you disadvantage half of the players.
Leave it as it is and you have players complaining about how they were warned and somebody else was not. :/
That's not a problem with the rules. That's a problem with staff not being on one line, staff simply not seeing it, or users just being stupid. "I insulted this person! Why did I get warned?!"
The rules arent clear cut and it makes some players mad when they are warned for something they previously 'got away with' when other staffers are on. Down to the Moderators discretion will alienate some staff members and people will also start labelling some staffers as the strict ones and other laid back. Which again isnt right being both are technically following the rules, but both wont be treated with the same amount of respect. Change the rule to make it clear cut, It will make some people unhappy, but change always does. But changing it will make it clear that its either allowed or not allowed so if you swear, you know you will be getting a warning rather then 'oh if this staff members is on, i might, or i might get away with it.
Well, as of right now we have different staff members treating the term "Occasional mild to moderate vulgarities" differently, causing complaints in chat because to some users it looks minor, but to staff it looks warn-worthy or vice versa, this could be handled with a clearly defined list as guideline, but that would require an extensive one.
Staff discretion has also been a problem today with other rules. Such as the Nickname rule, So I don't think the term staffers discretion should be used in any of the rules, there should be a set way of what is right and what is wrong and you go by it, This will make staff decisions look constant all the way through rather then some instances being seen and nothing done. Will also be easier to explain why they have been warned, without them coming back saying well he wasn't warned earlier.
I completley agree that nobody should be swearing what so ever. This is a family friendly server, however that image is ruined by those who swear. If I was a parent, I would not want my child om a server where other users are swearing. I'd say I'm one of the harsher moderators becuase I don't like swearing, theres no point in it, poeple are being too lazy to use proper english and express themselves in a decent way. Get rid of swearing. Make it against the rules. (Rant over )
If you were a parent and you didn't want your child exposed to cursing, then you wouldn't let him play multiplayer video games at all. Also, this is the internet. People don't have to use proper English. You spelled 'completely' and 'nobody' incorrectly. What's going to happen if your child gets exposed to the fart bomb anyway? Is he going to suffocate? Is he going to explode? No, he'll have the common sense to just walk away, or he'll be ok with the cursing and just stay. If you can't deal with them dirty words, then I suggest you take a bit out of the cookie of reality, especially since ur a super moderator in a virtual reality. (Rant over )
Right, let me get some things straight here. Firstly, I would want my child playing age appropriate games, of which I class minecraft one of them. Since we advertise this server as 'family friendly' I would assumd that it is okay for users of all ages. If we allow swearing, it is not family friendly. You are completley right that I would not let my child play if I knew that people were using vulgar langauge. Secondly, it is late at night, and I'm using my tablet, which is why they were spelt wrong. That doesn't take away from the fact that people should use standard english. Thirdly, people do not explode, suffocate or whatever else you think they do when they hear swearing, but it is not nice. Why should we be subjected to people f'ing and blinding every other sentence ust becuase they want to, or they feel it's ok. Let me tell you something, where I live and they way I've been brought up, swearing is not socially acceptable, it shows a lack of vocabulary if anything. Fourthly, I am a super moderator and part of my job as one is to stop people swearing and making the family friendly server less enjoyable. It is not okay for people to swear and I'm going to co tinue to fight it until the end. Finally, I do not appreciate your sarcasm at the end.
People need to learn that everyone swears every once in a while. Especially on the Internet. I'm perfectly fine with occasional swearing. There's no harm in saying a few bad words every so often. Due to religion, how a certain person was parented, etc they may not be okay with swearing. The thing is that people will always have an occasional time where they swear. Others just need to learn to grow a set and accept it. tl;dr Swear words exist and there are people who will use them from time to time. Grow up and accept it.
To quote my own post: Saying people are "too lazy" is implying that swearing is NOT a part of common informal speech. While it, in fact, is. Swearing is common, it's commonly used in informal speech. It's a way to express oneself in ways that are generally not possible with "proper English". I'd say "shit" has a bigger impact than "bummer". So when I express my frustration I will use the word "shit", because "bummer" has absolutely no impact whatsoever. "Bummer" is something I'd say when there's a minor setback. It's not a word you'd say out of frustration or anything, because it lacks the impact for it. Different words are used in different situations. disallowing swearing in general means banning the words I so commonly use. You'd be alienating me and many users like me. And that's just not cool. And to add to that. If any parent doesn't want their children to see swears then they have three choices. 1, disable chat in the multiplayer options. 2, use a chatfilter mod. And 3, prevent them from being in contact with other people. Yep, that's right. People swear. Even 10 year olds at school swear. People swear everywhere! It is up to the parent to teach their children about morality. It's up to the parents to teach their children about swearing, and when they can and can not swear. And parents who don't teach their children about this will end up having children who swear like sailors. Simply because children heard the words and have no idea what they actually mean. (or maybe they're rebelling teenagers, who knows) Enforcing people's personal morality is probably one of the most polarizing subjects you can bring up. Because personal morality is largely dependent on where you live. But it is a fact that swearing is a common thing. Why people are still so firmly against it I can't fathom, because swearing exists everywhere. Now, I understand that people won't use it in polite speech. But polite speech is largely different from informal speech in many different aspects. I don't believe it compares.
If this is the case can we at least agree that this isn't a family friendly server? Cause the only way it is is if you download, add additions/extras to combat what goes on the server? Cause that would make any server family friendly if thats the case?..
Sure, ECC is as family friendly as the rest of the world, bar some american tv channels. Family Friendly is just a silly term anyway. Who defines what's Family Friendly? Yeah, I believe it needs to go. It's a term that adds no value whatsoever. It only gives rise to false expectations. Another suggestion is to have a "personal filter" on ECC. AKA, Anyone who opts in using a command will no longer see the common swears. Call it parental controls.
I think your missing the point as well, Its not that parents don't want their kids to see it, they want them to learn thats its not appropriate to swear. When you went to go see your girlfriend for the first time, if you got angry at something, or something wasnt going your way, would you say 'oh thats bullshit' to say her father? I would guess not, you have a. More common sense then that and b. You do have some manners and understand that you can get across your point rather then lowering yourself to cuss words because you were frustrated. This in itself shows how swearing can be avoided. You could shout your frustration at the computer if it isnt going very well, But to: 1. Physically think of the sentence that includes a swear word 2. Type in in the chat window 3. Think about what you typed 4. Hit Enter Maybe shows just a lack of decency and lack of self control, id understand if chat records everything you said or thought, but it doesn't. You don't have to swear, even the the word shit in the way you described it. If you are that frustrated, why do we want to know or see it? Id rather you not say anything in chat and cool off away from the computer rather then throwing anger and salt into global reading your obscenities... If swearing is allowed, I don't see why Religion and Politics cant be allowed either as all three create great animosity from both sides, which end up causing tension and end up in a fight/argument on the server. Id rather it be easer for the mods to use a no swearing tolerated rule and not having to see it in chat.
Mission, you have just put into words what I was thinking, better than I could. I completely agree with you, you go through more than enough steps before you post a message containing swearing to delete the word and use something else. Ban swearing all together.
