[Suggestion] Spammy usernames

Yeah.... I don't think banning them is right, but they should be punished in some sort of way. They should have forced nicknames (a la Turt) and maybe even be nicknamed on the forums, first off. I think they should also be assessed a /warn every time they do this. +1

 

I think currently what works is fine. Andrew just gives them a perma nick name until they change the name.

 

Just strait ban them these aren't legit names this is just trolling, all it does is make chat hard to read.

I agree, though I think a bigger punishment could be useful. I don't think they should be banned but there should be consequences.

 

Agreed. I've never understood how the rules say:

• Spam is not allowed. Repetitive words, letters, symbols that aren’t used in their correct context, or many messages sent quickly are considered spam.

But usernames such as TURTTTTTTTTTTTTT are allowed.

Thinking of it, isn't that also a caps spam?

What constitutes as spammy? And should we ban users who just happen to join the server with a name like the names you listed?

I also think that changing username should have a cost in ecd. Hell, it takes time for staff to change a username, and there's players who just love to waste staff's time changing username every month.

my guess is 99.9% of the people who do it, do it to troll in some way.

 

This was literally (and yes not figuratively) what I was going to say. I read the suggestion and thought "well new users shouldn't be banned for joining." and then I thought "also were do we draw the line for a spammy name."
Now I know that this is a spammy name: I_am_a_potatoooooooooooooOOooOOOooOoOOOOOoooooo
but is this?: xXx_SomeoneAlreadyHadMyPvPName_xXx

You may not change your username to a username with more than 16 characters.

 

I would not constitute that as spammy. Although you are right with someone with a spammy name first joins and gets banned, maybe it should be if the person with the spammy name has played for a little. We can ask the player that just joined if they could change it and they shouldn't get banned unless they play for like 1 week or so.

 

I have never seen an account with a "spammy" name join the server. (That being the same letter over and over) I have only seen constant trolls do this to be, of course, annoying.

I don't think that perma-nickname would be a solution to the problem. You can't address people with their nickname (/msg, /mail, /pay, /seen, etc), so you still have to type that annoying string. They should just be banned from the server until they change their username into something reasonable.

 

That's essentially a -1 as you're suggesting what's already in place and nothing more.

 

I don't understand why the staff change names to things that are spammy.

 

It's easier to do any sort of applications this way, as otherwise they may promote the wrong user etc.
