Why? It's a waste of the time that staff could better use in monitoring threads and just playing on the server in general. I don't see the reason for having to apply for shops when a simple plugin could be used that allows players to add more days onto their plot via a sign.

Simple plugin? I think it's a lot more simple to do it through Applications... Using Plugins like that can be untrustworthy, and could lead to problems. Here on E.C.C we're not wasting time when it comes to Handling Applications, we want all Applications to be perfect - Using a plugin could lead to bugs, and the outcome could be very bad.
Another big reason we make everyone post an application for just about everything is because now we have thousands of records of almost everything that's ever happened on the server. If something were to go wrong or if someone had a question, we can just search through our application forums and find what we need. Removing the applications will not only leave important things up to an automated plugin rather than Wewin, our automated robot pony, but would also remove that added security of having records of everything.
With a plugin comes more lag than without, each plugin uses up some sort of ram amount from the server, each plugin uses cpu, and what happens this creates lag, the shop system we have know is working fine, we do not get plugin errors from it, we rarely have bugs with it, and well it leaves the owners to make sure they do some work. The server has been going a very long time with the market this way, and there has never been a need to make a plugin do the work of what a human can already do.
